New York Mets Buck 43-Year Trend

The New York Mets did something which had not been done in league history.

By failing to make the 2024 World Series, the New York Mets did something that had not been done in Major League Baseball history. New York defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in three games during the National League Wild Card round. In league history, this would have guaranteed the New York Mets being the National League’s representative in the “Fall Classic.” In nine previous instances in MLB history, the team that eliminated the Milwaukee Brewers in the MLB Postseason advanced to the World Series that season.

This trend began in 1981 when the New York Yankees defeated Milwaukee in the ALDS. Before 2024, five of the previous six seasons followed this trend. For example, in 2023 the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Milwaukee Brewers and advanced to the World Series where they lost to the Texas Rangers. Even if the New York Mets were to advance to the World Series, it was not a guarantee they would hoist the trophy. The teams that defeated the Milwaukee Brewers and later advanced to the World Series were 6-3.

New York Mets Playoff Summary

The New York Mets needed until the final day of the regular season to secure their spot in the MLB Playoffs. They were one of the hottest teams in the league and carried that momentum through the first two rounds of the postseason. As previously mentioned, New York bested the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Round. The Mets also defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in four games to advance to their first NLCS since 2015.

That was where the storybook 2024 for the New York Mets came to a bitter end at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York lost in six games to a Dodgers team that was better throughout the series. New York’s undoing in the NLCS was their lack of clutch hitting. New York was 2-of-26 with RISP in their four NLCS losses. The New York Mets needed better production from their offense to keep pace with a Dodgers offense that was historic.

New York Offseason Outlook

Even though the 2024 season came crashing down in Los Angeles, the New York Mets had a successful 2024 campaign. Team Owner Steve Cohen shared the sentiment he is proud of the ballclub for how they performed this season. New York must put 2024 in the rearview as they look to build toward 2025 and beyond. The biggest question facing the New York Mets this offseason is if the team can re-sign First Baseman Pete Alonso. He will be a free agent this offseason and will surely have countless suitors.

Alonso has expressed his desire to remain in Flushing Meadows, but the team that offers the best package will sign the perennial all-star. Alonso is far from the only key member of the Mets’ postseason roster who will become a free agent this offseason. After shocking the baseball world in 2024, the job for the New York Mets will not get easier as they enter a critical offseason.
