Klay Thompson Is 1 of 5 NBA Free Agents Who Can Win Titles

Klay Thompson will look to lead the Mavericks to a NBA title this season.

Dallas Mavericks Shooting Guard Klay Thompson is arguably one of five NBA free agents who can drive NBA teams to NBA titles. Thompson, 34, was recently described by USA TODAY as one of the most intriguing, title-altering free agent acquisitions to watch in the 2024-25 NBA season.

Klay Thompson might be past his prime, but he can help the Mavericks make an NBA title push in the upcoming season. As long as the team wins 50-plus games with several stars on the roster, the Mavericks’ NBA championship window can continue to exist. Read on for Thompson’s ranking and much more.

Klay Thompson With Dallas Mavericks

Former Golden State Warriors star shooting guard and “Splash Brother” Klay Thompson is with the Dallas Mavericks now. Thompson will likely play for the Mavericks until 2027. Thompson’s stint in Dallas might or might not pan out in a good or great way, but we’ll see what happens.

The Mavericks’ NBA championship aspirations are active, just as long as the Mavericks achieve more consistent three-point shooting. Klay Thompson is a three-pointer shooter and can help the Mavericks get past 9.6 made three-pointers at 31.6% shooting from the three-point line in 2024-25.

Thompson’s defense can help the Mavericks return to the Western Conference Finals and possibly the NBA Finals. Thompson will be a part of the “Big Three” alongside the Mavericks’ star duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but he might not be a No. 3 scorer in Dallas.

Thompson Can Succeed In Dallas

Klay Thompson can succeed in Dallas, Texas, after signing a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks in July 2024. Previously, Thompson’s five-year, $189.9 million contract with the Golden State Warriors expired after the 2023-24 NBA season.

Klay Thompson can help the Mavericks make the 2025 NBA Playoffs and possibly the NBA Finals, as long as good health and consistency are in the picture. Thompson’s solid three-point shooting and defense seem to still work for the Mavericks’ short and long-term plans.

Four Other NBA Free Agents

USA TODAY’s top-five list mentioned four other NBA free agents: Philadelphia 76ers Forward Paul George, Sacramento Kings Small forward DeMar DeRozan, Orlando Magic Shooting Guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Oklahoma City Thunder Center Isaiah Hartenstein. George, 34, is still a good player. George’s most recent stat line with averages of 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 47.1% from the field and 41.3% from the three-point line can help the 76ers win a title with star center Joel Embiid.\

DeRozan, 35, is entering his 16th NBA season and will try to help a Kings team win a playoff series for the first time since 2004. The Kings were reported to sought him out to help their current stars, Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox, take them to the next level.

Caldwell-Pope, 31, can deliver for the Magic. Caldwell-Pope’s three-point shooting, which was 35.2% in the regular season and 30.9% in the postseason, and defense and NBA championship experience can help a young and promising Magic team. Hartenstein, 26, took on significant offensive and defensive roles for an injury-plagued New York Knicks team in 2023-24 before signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder in July 2024. Hartenstein’s a center who can give the Thunder, who had the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference for 2023-24, more depth.
