Lonnie Walker IV had an impressive preseason for the Boston Celtics, leaving many fans speculating on his future with the team. Walker is currently signed to an E10 contract, meaning once training camp ends, the Celtics can waive him and send him down to the G-League. But Lonnie Walker IV has been working hard, putting in the hours, and contributing to the Celtics’ success in preseason games. Now, after the Boston Celtics have played their final preseason game, it won’t be long before roster decisions are finalized, and Walker learns if his efforts were enough.
Lonnie Walker IV’s Preseason
Lonnie Walker IV’s preseason for the Boston Celtics did not get off to the greatest start. In their first two preseason games against the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi, Walker barely saw the floor. He only got four minutes of playing time and scored 0 points. Obviously, with only four minutes, Walker did not have time to show what we could do and why he deserved a roster spot. It was not much better for Walker in their second preseason game. He played seven minutes and shot 0-of-4, for 0 points again.
Walker came to the Boston Celtics for an opportunity but had yet to receive one in-game. That changed when the Celtics returned to the TD Garden to play the Philadelphia 76ers. Walker played 25 minutes and had 9 points on 4-of-7 shooting with 7 assists. His performance turned many heads, and he continued to play well. The following night, Lonnie Walker IV started and had his best game of the preseason. Against the Toronto Raptors, Walker had 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting. In the increased minutes, he was putting his scoring ability on display, showing why he would be a valuable asset for the defending NBA champions.
Walker did not play in the Celtics’ final preseason game, but the Boston fans had seen enough. From what he had shown when given significant minutes, Walker was an efficient microwave scorer who could space the floor, shoot, and get to the basket. Many Celtics fans have been clamoring in support for Lonnie Walker in the hope that he makes the 15-man roster.
Walker IV Looks To Make Roster
Lonnie Walker IV has been eager to prove himself since arriving in Boston. At practices, he has been one of the last players to leave the gym. And when he has received minutes throughout the preseason, he has been effective. But that does not mean he is guaranteed to make the Celtics’ 15-man roster. The Boston Celtics have many players that are already secured in their positions. The entire starting five, Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Xavier Tillman are all sure things. That leaves five open spots.
Jaden Springer, Neemias Queta, and Jordan Walsh were all on the team last season and are not currently under two-way contracts, so one, two, or all three of them could make the roster over Walker. Then, there is the Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman, who was a first-round draft pick. If all of these players were to make the roster, that leaves Lonnie Walker IV along with two-way players J.D. Davison, Drew Peterson, and Anton Watson, as well as everyone else on E10 deals. So, it is going to be close.
Final Thoughts
Lonnie Walker IV has impressed many with his play throughout the preseason. With proven experience as a role player on winning teams and a scorer off the bench, many believe that Walker could make the Boston Celtics 15-man roster, despite his current E10 contract. But it will not be an easy decision. The Celtics are bringing back many players from the previous championship team and have other rookies and two-way players ready to move up. As of right now, nothing is certain for Lonnie Walker IV, but it will be a situation to keep an eye on.
