After a difficult two-game road trip, USU soccer returned to themselves playing Colorado. In those last two road games, the high-scoring Aggies uncharacteristically scored a single goal. Utah State soccer returned in the win column Thursday afternoon in convincing fashion, earning a 6-0 victory over Colorado College at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field.
A few days ago, Utah State was ranked 11th and suffered its first loss of the season to Wyoming 2-0. This only loss and tie with Boise State dropped their ranking and snapped their longest unbeaten streak in program history. After playing Colorado, the Aggies are back on top, dealing with other universities and treating it like business as usual.
First Half, First Goal
Starting the game, the Aggies didn’t waste any time, scoring in less than two minutes. Senior Midfielder Rine Yonaha sent a shot that the Tiger keeper deflected back. It was graduate Midfielder Alex Day who rebounded it and set it into the back of the net easily.
The score remained 1-0 through the rest of the half, but USU tacked on two more in the first 10 minutes of the second half. First, it was a goal from sophomore Forward Kate Christian capitalizing on a well-placed cross from junior Forward Tess Werts in the 49th minute. Then it was Yonaha delivering a penalty kick goal after a foul in the box in the 56th minute.
Out Shooting Team Work
Like most of the season, the Aggies outshot their opponent by a significant margin. USU took 26 shots — 14 on goal — to four shots by the Tigers with one on goal. Aggie Keeper Cora Brendle had to make just one save. A pair of Colorado College goalies combined for eight saves.
The duo of freshman Forward Ellie Hendrix and senior Forward Bizzy Arevalo connected on back-to-back goals in the 75th and 79th minutes, giving Arevalo the first career brace. Freshman Midfielder Faith Hines wrapped up the scoring in the final minute with her first career goal, sending a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal following a cross from junior Forward Kaylie Chambers.
USU Wasn’t Done Yet
USU possessed the ball more than Colorado College throughout the contest. Offside calls were about all that slowed the Aggies down, as the Tigers constantly used an offside trap. The Aggies were whistled for being offside 17 times.
Like the first half, the Aggies quickly scored to start the second 45 minutes. In the 49th minute, Kate Christian took a well-placed cross from Tess Werts and scored. Chambers was also credited with an assist. Christian led the team in shots with five for the game.
This was just the second time in program history that USU scored six more goals in a shutout victory. Thursday marked the third time the Aggies have scored five or more goals this season. USU has outscored opponents 49-11 on the season. With the shutout, the Aggies now have ten clean sheets. The school record is 11 for a season, set in 2011 and 2013. For the next match, USU will stay at home over the weekend and will host Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for noon at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field.
