Week 6: Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers: Proofs, Petitions, and Predictions

The Denver Broncos head into an important game with the Chargers on Sunday.

When the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers take the field on Sunday afternoon at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, two of the top defenses in the NFL will face off. The Broncos will look to keep their winning streak alive against the Chargers, who are coming off a bye week and a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Proofs

Both teams are looking to prove themselves as the top-ranked defense in the National Football League. The defense that proves it is the best will win this game.

The Denver Broncos have the best cornerback duo in the NFL with Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss. The two cornerbacks will need to prove this week that they are worthy of that title. Justin Herbert, one of the premier quarterbacks in the league, has not been required to pass the ball at nearly the rate he has over the past few years. The running game of the Chargers has been effective, and Herbert has not been tasked with throwing the ball.

The Denver Broncos defense must stop the run with a stout defensive line led by Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers. If the Broncos can stop the running game, it will give Surtain and Moss the opportunity to make similar big plays as they did last week against the Raiders. It is time for the Broncos’ secondary to prove it is indeed the best in the NFL.

Petitions

The Kansas City Chiefs have been led by their defense through five weeks this season.

Sean Payton, for the love of all things football, please, please, please use a tight end. The Denver Broncos’ tight ends this year have not combined for 100 receiving yards. The tight end is an effective option for a rookie quarterback to exploit the middle of the field with seam patterns, and for some reason, they have been totally ignored through the first five weeks.

Last week, Greg Dulcich was inactive, although healthy. Lucas Krull took his spot but did little to cement his future as an effective alternative. It does not matter who the tight end will be; it only matters that the Broncos use at least one to impact the game on Sunday.

The Chiefs sneaked out a win against the Chargers two weeks ago, largely because they used a two-tight-end system that continually peppered the middle of the field. There is no Travis Kelce on the Broncos roster, but there must be one who can, at the very least, be a threat to take the eyes of the defense off of rookie quarterback Bo Nix and running back Javonte Williams.

Predictions

This is going to be an old-fashioned three-yard and a cloud of dust football game. It will not be pretty, and it probably will not provide any highlight reels. Buckle in for a hard-hitting AFC West Division game that will be extremely important for both teams.

The Denver Broncos’ offensive line is banged up, and they will most likely have a backup at the center and right guard positions. If the offensive line can impose its will on the Chargers and use Williams’ hard running, they will be able to wear down the banged-up Chargers and win this game in the fourth quarter.

The defense will continue its solid play and will force at least one Chargers turnover. Overall score? Denver Broncos 21; Los Angeles Chargers 10.
