Happy Coco Gauff Will Face Sabalenka In Wuhan Open Semifinal

Coco Gauff will play Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the finals.

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka are set for a semifinal clash in the Wuhan Open. The pair of Grand Slam champions will meet for the eighth time for a spot in the final. Both of them stunned their opponent in straight sets to set up their meeting in the semifinals. Gauff won her ninth consecutive match on Friday easing past Poland’s Magda Linette. Sabalenka remained undefeated with her 15th consecutive win at the venue over Magdalena Frech. Who will win this match?

Coco Gauff’s Impressive Mood Showed No Sign Of Ending

Gauff’s impressive Asian swing showed no sign of ending as she recorded her 50th win of the season. She routed Magda Linette 6-0, 6-4. It was also the 20-year-old American’s ninth straight win in China, a streak including the China Open victory last week. “I’m really happy with how I played,” Gauff said.

Despite the smooth victory, Coco Gauff still showed her issues on serve. She served eight double faults in the match. However, she saved all five break points she faced, and from 3-2 down in the second set won 12 of 14 points to take control. Coco Gauff next faces top seed Aryna Sabalenka, who cruised past Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-2.

Sabalenka Holds Keys To Deal with Gauff’s Power

Gauff, who defeated Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final, holds a 4-3 lifetime edge over Sabalenka. But, the Belarusian took the win in their last meeting, at this year’s Australian Open final. Sabalenka admitted that she had a lot of big matches and great fights with Gauff. “I think the main thing is, once again, focus on myself, focus on my footwork, go to the net, finish the point over there,” she said.

Aryna Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion at Wuhan, was her typical relentless self as she crushed 42 winners in the quarterfinal. She completed the record as she was the 2018 and 2019 champion – before the event had a long break because of the pandemic. The 26-year-old continues to close the gap on the World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

Gauff and Sabalenka’s Rivalry Has Been Compelling

Coco Gauff and Sabalenka first met at the Lexington Open four years ago. Gauff, only 16 at the time, won that in three sets. She held a 3-1 advantage in the head-to-head early on, but Sabalenka won two of their last three matches. Sabalenka’s momentum may have stalled slightly following her China Open loss to Karolina Muchova in the semifinal.

Sabalenka has been in fine form in recent months, winning the US Open and Cincinnati Open titles. However, Coco Gauff also has new energy after her new partnership with Matt Daly. This great start promises to be a hard-fought and hugely intriguing encounter. Especially, Gauff had recently won the China Open. The winner of this match will face the winner of the match between Qinwen Zheng and Wang Xinyu.
