West Indies Crush Scotland In T20 World Cup

Ireland against South Africa, west indies

In the T20 World Cup, the West Indies wiped out Scotland in 12 overs to open their account. Scotland won the toss and chose to bat first, but their innings were damaged early on as the West Indies bowlers put pressure from the start. Afy Fletcher’s three-wicket haul and Chinelle Henry’s all-around performance (1-10 & 18 off 10) helped the Windies win a decisive victory. They held Scotland to 99 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs.

The West Indies lost significant wickets in the first overs. However, Henry and Deandra Dottin combined for 42 runs in just 20 balls. They also made up for the hammering NRR had taken after losing against South Africa by 10 wickets the previous two days. Saskia Horley’s fours off Henry gave Scotland a strong start. A few deliveries later, she was caught by Matthews while trying to beat the infield by holing out to mid-on.

West Indies Control Intense Power Play

Sarah Bryce, Scotland’s top scorer in the previous game, could only manage two runs. It was a disappointing situation for the team. Alisa Lister was knocked down twice on consecutive deliveries. Henry proceeded to stymie the batter in the following over, as Scotland finished with a PowerPlay score of 25 for 2. Lister finally hit the boundary in the eighth over against offspinner Ashmini Munisar. Despite their poor fielding, the West Indies never let Scotland break free. They kept an eye on the scoring rate.

Henry dropped Lister again, this time at long-on. Lister’s run of luck came to an end when she holed out to deep midwicket off Afy Fletcher. The spinner trapped Priyanaz Chatterji on the very next delivery, leaving Scotland at 62 for 4 in 13 overs. Skipper Kathryn Bryce and Lorna Jack both hit boundaries before the former edged a sweep to mid-on. This marked Fletcher’s third wicket. The Scots continued to fall as Jack was run out a few balls later, drastically reducing their potential score. Karishma Ramharack took two wickets in the final over as Scotland scored 99.

Stafanie Taylor replied with a thick-edged one for four before being bowled the next ball. Qiana Joseph was dropped at mid-off, highlighting the team’s weak fielding. The batter hammered a six and a four straight down the ground in the next two overs, punishing the Scots. Matthews, on the other hand, had no such luck, as her straight-batted punch landed square in the middle.

However, a messy over with eight wides and a boundary kept the West Indies in the lead. Olivia Bell grabbed a brilliant catch off her bowling to dismiss Shemaine Campbell and Joseph in two overs, putting the West Indies at 59 for four. Dottin and Henry, however, struck a four and a six after Joseph was substituted out. Dottin finished the chase with two sixes and a four off Abtaha Maqsood with 8.1 overs left.

Final Verdict

The win against Scotland gave the West Indies a strong start to their T20 World Cup campaign. The squad, known for its strong bowling attack and aggressive batting, proved their skills in the first game. It is encouraging for the West Indies’ remaining tournament games because they put out a well-rounded performance against Scotland.
