Sanath Jayasuriya Named Sri Lanka’s New Head Coach

Sanath Jayasuriya

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced the appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as the men’s team’s permanent head coach following his recent outstanding performance. After the T20 World Cup 2024, the former Sri Lanka opener took on the post of temporary coach. But his term as head coach has now been extended to March 2026. The Sri Lankan squad has undoubtedly performed better since Jayasuriya became their coach.

The first series of the former Sri Lankan captain’s career was a home series victory against India in the ODI format. After the India series, Sri Lanka traveled to England and won a Test match against the hosts at the Oval. After that, Sri Lanka won a Test series 2-0 against New Zealand. The first T20I and ODI series that Sanath Jayasuriya will oversee as a full-time head coach is the one against the West Indies, which kicks off on October 13.

Sanath Jayasuriya As SL Coach

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is pleased to announce the hiring of Sanath Jayasuriya as head coach. The appointment took effect on October 1, 2024, and will continue until March 31, 2026, according to an official announcement from Sri Lanka Cricket. Jayasuriya captained the team for four years. He led to a World Cup semi-final appearance in 2003. In 2004, he experienced one of his best seasons as a batsman.

In 2006, Sanath Jayasuriya announced his retirement, but he returned within weeks, eventually stepping off the Test stage 18 months later. In one-day matches, he led Sri Lanka to another World Cup final in 2007, and he was pivotal in the Asia Cup victory in 2008.

Jayasuriya’s Impressive Career

Sanath Jayasuriya’s election to parliament in April 2010 and subsequent loss at the T20 World Cup suggested that his international career was over. But he was named to the 30-man squad for the 2011 World Cup, albeit he did not play in the competition. Later that year, in England, he played his final ODI and T20I, only weeks before his 42nd birthday. Jayasuriya, a former Sri Lanka captain, is regarded as one of the best one-day international batters of all time, having played a key role in the country’s World Cup victory in 1996.

Sanath Jayasuriya represented Sri Lanka 586 times in all three formats of the game, scoring 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets. Jayasuriya made his final international appearance in 2011. In 2018, the former national selector was banned from all forms of cricket for two years after an incident with the International Cricket Council‘s (ICC) anti-corruption unit. Jayasuriya was also charged after neglecting to hand over his mobile phone, and he was suspected of hindering or delaying an investigation.

Parting Thoughts

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee made the decision to prolong Sanath Jayasuriya’s role as head coach. This was based on the team’s strong performances in recent tours against top teams, during which Jayasuriya served as interim head coach. Sanath Jayasuriya’s first full-time series as head coach will begin on October 13 against the West Indies. As a former captain, he guided Sri Lanka to the World Cup semifinals in 2003 and was a key figure in their run to the final in 2007. The squad has performed better since he started coaching, which is why he is here to stay.
