Something happened this weekend in college football that had not been done in nearly eight years. For the first time since 2016, four teams ranked in the top 11 were beaten by unranked teams. No. 1 Alabama lost 40-35 to Vanderbilt on the road, No. 4 Tennessee lost 19-14 to Arkansas on the road, No. 1o Michigan lost 27-17 to Washington on the road, and No. 11 USC lost 24-17 to Minnesota on the road.
There would have been five such upsets, but No. 8 Miami overcame a 25-point deficit to defeat an unranked Cal team on the road. It was not all negative for the top 11 teams in the nation this weekend though. No. 6 Oregon defeated Michigan State 31-10, No. 5 Georgia defeated Auburn 31-13, and No. 7 Penn State defeated UCLA 27-11. College Football Shaken Up On Saturday
With four unranked teams defeating top 11 teams at home, it was bedlam on college campuses. From fans rushing the field to goalposts being thrown into rivers, it was an unforgettable day throughout college football. These large upsets also had ramifications on the most recent AP Top 25 poll. The Texas Longhorns are now the top team in the nation following an off week and Ohio State climbed one spot to No. 2 after defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes 35-7.
All four of these teams saw their rankings tumble after such a rough day. Alabama is now No. 7, Tennessee is No. 8., Michigan is No. 24., and USC has dropped out of the rankings. The only head-to-head matchup being ranked teams on Saturday also yielded shocking results. No. 9 Missouri visited No. 25 Texas A&M and got drubbed. The Aggies won 41-20 and skyrocketed to the No. 15 team in the nation.
Looking Ahead To Next Week
There are three head-to-head matchups between ranked teams this weekend in college football. No. 1 Texas takes on No. 18 Oklahoma in the “Allstate Red River Rivalry,” No. 2 Ohio State visits No. 3 Oregon, and No. 9 Ole Miss visits No. 13 LSU.
The ranked teams that lost Saturday want to get back in the win column this weekend. Alabama looks to rebound at home against the South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee hosts the Florida Gators, Michigan is idle, and USC welcomes Penn State to town. With six of the top 11 teams in college football facing unranked opponents, they want to make sure a repeat of last Saturday does not occur this coming Saturday.
