Patrick Surtain II and the Denver Broncos Crush Raiders in Week 5 Blowout

Denver Broncos

Just when it looked like the Denver Broncos were going to go down 17-0 in the first quarter, Patrick Surtain II intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 100 yards for a massive touchdown.  The Denver Broncos never looked back on their way to a crushing 34-18 victory at home against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Long Overdue

It had been eight games and over four years since the Denver Broncos last defeated the men in black. That came to a crashing end on Sunday afternoon as the Denver Broncos Defense again stood tall and thwarted everything the Raiders attempted.

After Surtain’s franchise record 100-yard pick-six, the Raiders lost all momentum and could never recover.  The Denver defense stymied the Raiders to the point where starting quarterback Gardner Minshew was pulled from the game after he threw yet another interception to Surtain.  Aiden O’Connell came in to relieve Minshew and led a late-game scoring drive.  But the damage had already been done by the Denver defense.

The Broncos’ defensive front line created pressure all afternoon, mostly while only rushing four players. That allowed Surtain, Riley Moss, and impact players like budding star Justin Strnad, who led the team with seven solo tackles and nine total on the afternoon, to limit the Raiders’ offensive production.

Enough Offense

The Denver Broncos offense, led by rookie quarterback Bo Nix, looked like it was still in New York stuck in the rain. In the second half, however, Nix began to find a groove that may bode well for the rest of the year. He found 11 different receivers for just over 200 yards and threw for two touchdowns.

The Broncos will be thrilled with their blowout victory over the Raiders, but there were a number of plays left on the field. Bo Nix could have had a massive day if his old college teammate Troy Franklin had hauled in a wide-open touchdown pass.  It wasn’t meant to be, and there are plenty of timing plays that Nix and his receivers can look to improve upon moving forward.

A bright spot for the Broncos on Sunday afternoon was their ability to control the line of scrimmage and run the ball when needed.  While the Broncos only tallied 109 yards on the ground, Javonte Williams had another solid game that continues to give him the confidence to be the primary running back.

Looking Ahead

The Chargers come to Empower Field at Mile High next week, and the Denver Broncos will look to extend their winning streak to four games. Bo Nix is the first rookie quarterback to win three straight games in franchise history, and he will look to extend that to four games next Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos started October off on the right foot, and the upcoming schedule is favorable for the team to make a considerable push to the top of the table in the AFC West and the AFC.
