The Boston Red Sox were active prior to the trade deadline this year. One choice they made that backfired right when it counted the most was Luis Garcia. A pitcher from the Los Angeles Angels clubhouse who had great promise during a time in the season when the Red Sox still had a chance to make the playoffs. In 45 appearances with the Angels Garcia had a 3.71 ERA, John Henry and Alex Cora agreed the idea to tighten up the bullpen was a priority.
Things Don’t Always Work Out How You Want
After the last-minute trade deal between Los Angeles and Boston, Garica suited up for Boston on August 2nd and pitched one inning finishing the night with a 3.17 ERA. In the following games in August Garcia appeared to continue to deflate in performance and increase his ERA stats. It was a flop, the Red Sox knew it and Garcia knew it.
September continued and the Red Sox never allowed him to pitch more than two innings for the half-season he was dressed for Boston. Garcia was not showing promise and the race was tight for a few weeks so Cora worked with the bullpen and picked his best combination that didn’t favor Garcia much at all. The Angels may be relieved Garica left at the right time, but one thing is for sure Henry is not pleased with the massive decline Garcia had in performance.
Red Sox Most Likely Do Not Re-Sign
As a free agent, it could go two ways, Henry could look at Luis Garcia as an investment he has spent money on and wants to make sure there is a return. Meaning, that Garica could be kept on the 2025 Red Sox roster and get to begin the season in Fort Myers with the team, find himself as a Red Sox player, connect with the team, and pitch wonderfully next year.
Or, Henry will cut his losses and move on to the mess that is the current Boston bullpen. There is a lot of work to be done and while there are great young candidates it behooves Boston to keep veterans around the game. For experience and balance the Red Sox failed to have this year. It is imperative that if this MLB veteran does not re-sign with the Red Sox next year, there needs to be more veterans acquired for the overall health of the clubhouse.
Garcia Likely To Sign Elsewhere
With the numbers Garica put up since wearing his Boston uniform, he most likely understands if the Red Sox do not resign him. It could’ve just not been the right fit for Garcia to be successful with Alex Cora’s coaching style and the hard-pressed fans of New England sports. We may never understand the reasons players can be great in one place and awful in another, but we do know that Boston needs a winning roster if they want to avoid a fourth year of a playoff-less October.
