Harmanpreet Kaur to Lead India’s Batting at No. 3 in T20 World Cup

The long-running argument over India’s number three place in T20Is appears to have been resolved, with the captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, providing the answer. Ahead of India’s T20 World Cup opener against New Zealand, head coach Amol Muzumdar confirmed an internal decision made well before the event, notwithstanding recent experimentation.

This move marks a big shift in India’s batting philosophy. Harmanpreet Kaur, who generally plays at No. 4 or 5, has frequently found herself confined by the match situation when coming in late, needing to speed from ball one. India hopes that she will have enough time to settle in and unleash her power game more effectively by advancing to third place. Although Kaur’s choice to participate has garnered media attention, Muzumdar also highlighted India’s depth, pointing to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) to broaden the talent pool.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Upcoming Challenge

Players who have seized the chance to progress in their careers include all-rounder Shreyanka Patil, who is just 12 T20Is old but already a valuable element of India’s bowling attack, and captain Sajana. These players’ fitness and fielding standards have improved since he took over as coach, thanks to organized monitoring tools provided by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Harmanpreet Kaur’s ability to shift the game when the set has always been her most valuable asset, and management is counting on her to maximize that potential from the key No. 3 spot. “Absolutely. Not just the warm-up games, but we had already decided back in India during the camps that happened before we set off for the World Cup,” Muzumdar stated. “These pre-World Cup matches stamped that for us. If you go through the scorecards, it is already there. Is it a surprise? No. If you can guess, you can go through the scorecards, and you will find it,” he added.

Kaur’s Tournament Journey

Harmanpreet Kaur has competed in every edition of the tournament so far, and at 35, she is taking on a new challenge that is difficult for her skill level. Harmanpreet Kaur is hardly the fastest of starts, but she has spent most of her T20I career at No. 4, where she could afford to take her time before lifting the ante in the finish. The No. 3 will be called upon frequently to navigate the powerplay, and dot balls in the opening six overs are not ideal.

Despite low scores in recent warm-up matches, the plan to consolidate Harmanpreet Kaur’s position at No. 3 was in place well before the tournament began. The decision follows a period of trial and error, with numerous players tested in that role. Dayalan Hemalatha‘s seven-match spell provided only 139 runs, while brief attempts with Sajeevan Sajana and Uma Chetry failed to produce the needed consistency.

Final Thoughts

India’s T20 World Cup campaign will begin on Friday when they face New Zealand. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup occurs in the United Arab Emirates from October 3 to October 20. Third-ranked India takes on fourth-ranked New Zealand in a match critical to both team’s hopes of making it to the knockout stages. While New Zealand split their games against the Proteas (win) and England (loss), India seemed to be in excellent form during the warm-up matches, defeating both the West Indies and South Africa.
