The Smart Replay System will be used for the first time at an ICC event, the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. The technology had already been employed in the Hundred and IPL 2024, but this time the Smart Replay System allows the TV umpire to receive inputs directly from two Hawk-Eye operators who will be sitting in the same room as the umpire and will show her footage taken by Hawk-Eye’s eight high-speed cameras across the ground.
The television broadcast director, who formerly served as a liaison between the third umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators, will no longer be involved under this system. This also allows the TV umpire to refer to more visuals than he previously could, such as split-screen displays. This event will feature an all-female team of umpires and match officials, as was the case with the T20 World Cup last year.
Smart Replay System in World Cup
In the event of a stumping referral using the Smart Replay System, the TV umpire can request split-screen visuals from the Hawk-Eye operators. If there is a noticeable gap when the ball passes the bat, the TV umpire will not request the UltraEdge (to determine if it was caught behind) and will instead proceed to review the side-on replay for the stumping.
If the TV umpire does not perceive a clear gap between the bat and the ball, she will only use UltraEdge. “The coverage will feature a minimum of 28 cameras at every game and will be complemented by a variety of analytical and visual enhancements. The Decision Review System (DRS) will also be available at all matches, with a Hawk-Eye Smart Replay System in place that enables the TV umpire to instantly review synchronized multi-angle footage for accurate decision-making,” according to an ICC announcement.
Women’s T20 World Cup
For stumpings, the new Smart Replay System will show the TV umpire tri-vision, which combines footage from side-on and front-on cameras into a single picture. The front-on camera angle is significant because it provides an accurate view of the bails being removed. Previously, when the Smart Replay System was not used, the broadcaster would display the side-on angles from each side, as well as footage from the Stump Cam. However, Stump Cam records the action at a low pace of roughly 50 frames per second, as opposed to Hawk-Eye cameras. It records at approximately 300 frames per second, resulting in more accurate footage for the umpires to make their decision on.
Women’s T20 World Cup is on full boom! Australia is the defending champion, having won the past three championships in a row. In reality, Australia has won the tournament every year save two, with England winning the first edition in 2009 and the West Indies winning in 2016. They are now aiming for their sixth title and will face Sri Lanka in the tournament’s opening match on Saturday at 3.30 pm IST in Sharjah. India, meanwhile, has only made it to the final once, in 2020, when they were defeated by Australia by 85 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
