USU Soccer Does The Imposable Win Over San Diego State

USU, Utah State

The USU Soccer team did the impossible by doing almost all the right things, beating San Diego State for the first time in programable history. The Aggies have gone undefeated so far this season and tied twice. They have the best record they have ever had and broke several records on 10/03/24 on Chuck & Gloria Bell Field. This wasn’t a normal game, as San Diego State was the Mountain West regular-season champions with a record of 5-1. This will undauntedly improve their 12th ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Aggies dropped in ranking after a scoreless draw with Fresno State. In addition, the Aggies are currently 16th in the NCAA women’s RPI ranking.

USU Does The Imposable

The Aggies have miraculously started each game strong and scored early. Playing against San Diego, the match went quietly until the game went about half an hour in. Aggie junior forward Tess Werts crossed the ball from the corner to forward Mia Mullenmeister. The pass couldn’t be better as Mia only had to deflect it in for the game’s first goal.

The next important point came almost an hour into the game. Sophomore forward Brooklyn Smith connected with the ball with a powerful right kick that went past the Aztec goal in the top right corner of the goal. This gave the Aggies some breathing room and it was the first goal Brooklyn has made for her college career.

Brooklyn Smith Does It Again

Once Smith tasted her first goal, she didn’t waste any time. Just a few minutes later, she scored again. This time, she did it further out of the box from about 20 yards. USU celebrated with her for a few moments, which gave them an almost unstoppable momentum as they were 3-1 now.

The Aggies weren’t done yet. Sophomore forward Kate Christian passed it right to Werts’s feet, who just had to give a small dance and tap for the ball to find the net. USU was now four up on the Aztecs, and it didn’t look like the Aggies could do anything wrong. It was about 85 minutes into the game when things changed for USU.

In the 64th minute, Werts got in on the scoring action with her own goal, capitalizing on a well-placed pass from sophomore forward Kate Christian to extend the lead. The final Aggie goal of the night came in the 84th minute when a corner led to an opportunity for sophomore forward Presley Ray, who scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

Utah State Head Coach Manny Martins

“I’m super proud of the group,” he said. “In the last game, I thought our opponent presented some challenges that forced us to do a little bit of introspection and grow a little bit, but we hit the reset button and today we showed energy. It was fantastic. We had players coming in that haven’t played a ton of minutes and they’re coming in and scoring goals and having assists. I could not be more proud of our group today.”

The coach’s words were well-founded, as this was the first time the Aggies beat the Aztecs. This was also the longest USU has gone without a loss in program history. Another fantastic fact so far this season is that these ladies have scored five goals against an opponent this year. It has been three years that any team has scored five goals against San Diego State.

The Aggies are not just doing fantastic offensively, as they have scored 41 goals so far this season but have only let eight goals on them. USU attempted 26 shots at the Aztecs and only allowed eight attempts on their own goal. Mia led the Aggies as she tried four shots on goal herself. USU will need to keep things up when they play again on Sunday, October 6th, when they host New Mexico at 1 p.m.
