Game five of the 2024-2025 NHL Preseason took place in the infamous fortress. With the Golden Knights’ most recent foe following Vegas to their home turf, the Knights and Avalanche played a very physical game. Ultimately taking a losing the game this evening, the Golden Knights played extremely well. One of the biggest traits associated with the Vegas hockey club is depth and multitalented players. Tonight, the team showcased that.
Period One
The first period of game five started with Ilya Samsonov in the crease for the Golden Knights. Veteran players like Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, Brayden McNabb, and Alex Pietrangelo stepped onto the ice for the back-to-back opponent, the Colorado Avalanche. Unfortunately, the spot on the bench for William Karlsson was still cold due to maintenance regarding an injury. The Colorado Avalanche had a slight edge in the first period. With more shots on goal, Ilya Samsonov defended his net with zeal making very impressive saves despite his shorter stature.
A few breaks, blocks, and incomplete puck passing by the Golden Knights were noticed in the first period of game five. The Avalanche were fierce on the poke checks and blocked passes. During a few moments of struggle for the Knights in the defensive end, the Avalanche sent a deflected knuckle-puck past Samsonov through the crease. The Knights stepped up the urgency in the offensive plays in response. As the intensity grew, the time clock decreased, and the Golden Knights were unable to even the score before the end of period one in game five.
Period Two
At the drop of the puck to start period two in game five of the 2024-2025 NHL Preseason, Brendan Brisson caught a slashing penalty. Immediately following the next faceoff, The Avalanche drew a holding penalty. The four-on-four came up unfruitful for both teams, but the Colorado Avalanche would slip another shot past Samsonov after the power play, making the score 2-0. The majority of the second period appeared sluggish for both clubs. Despite the slow gameplay, the Golden Knights steadily wore the Avalanche down in Game Five.
Despite the score deficit, the Golden Knights owned the Colorado Avalanche’s defensive zone. Players like Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, Brendan Brisson, Tanner Laczynski, and Zach Whitecloud were constantly throwing pucks toward the net. Contrary to Whitecloud’s position, he was hugely active on the offense. After a slip in Colorado’s discipline, the Golden Knights were sent to the power play. A few seconds in, Mark Stone passed the puck to lethal goal scorer Jack Eichel, who buried the puck in the back of the Avalanche’s net, finally getting Vegas on the board.
Period Three
Game five continued for the Golden Knights and the Colorado Avalanche. The game appeared more like a regular season game in the one-on-one puck battles and sheer physicality. The Golden Knights made clever passes throughout the third period, sustaining pressure on the Colorado Avalanche, mirroring the previous period. Once again, the Avalanche drew a delay in the game penalty, possibly due to desperation for a line change.
The Golden Knights were relentless on the offensive. Vegas provided the degree of intensity that leaves you shocked that they still had not scored. Colorado was scrambling to break up the Knights attack and eventually did so. The Knights went from breathing down Colorado goaltender Justus Annuenen’s neck to battling in the offensive zone for puck possession. With the Golden Knights hungry to even the score, they pulled goaltender Ilya Samsonov for an extra attacker. Only to lose possession, allowing an empty net goal for the Avalanche, ending Game Five, 3-1.

Many players in various positions stepped up tonight, creating plays, battling for the puck, reducing penalties, and prioritizing moving the puck to the net. After a rough first period, the club’s veteran and new players better blended. Overall, the Knights appeared confident in spite of their considerable loss of key players this offseason. Mixing new players with tenured Knights has proven successful thus far. Although the club takes the loss this evening, their overall gameplay is much superior to past preseason games.
