Carlo Ancelotti and Ferland Mendy on the Outs

Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly run out of patience with left-back Ferland Mendy and wants him replaced by 2025. Mendy, who joined from Lyon for £40.3m in 2019, has struggled to find consistency at Real Madrid, largely due to recurring injuries. The French defender has never completed more than 26 La Liga matches in a season, though he has managed to stay fit early this campaign, making nine appearances across all competitions.

Real Madrid suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Lille, with Jonathan David scoring the decisive goal from a penalty in the 48th minute. Ancelotti’s side put in a poor showing, and the manager was understandably frustrated with their lacklustre performance.

“Lille were the better team and deserved to win. We were bad and slow tonight,” Ancelotti admitted to reporters, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. “We didn’t create anything; our possession was slow, and we had no ideas. We were bad in every aspect.”

Real Madrid’s Poor Performance and Ferland Mendy’s Situation

Despite this extension, ‘Defensa Central‘ reports that Carlo Ancelotti has grown dissatisfied with Mendy’s performances, particularly after the surprise loss to Lille, which served as a ‘wake-up call.’ The report claims that Ancelotti has mentally moved on from Mendy, raising the possibility that the left-back could depart as soon as next summer despite the recent contract renewal.

In Real Madrid’s recent Champions League match against Lille, Mendy was substituted at halftime for Fran Garcia, marking the second time he has been taken off at the break this season. Mendy has failed to finish four of his nine matches this season, yet the club extended his contract until 2027, avoiding the risk of him for no compensation at the end of this season.

With Ferland Mendy unable to provide his regular services, Francisco Garcia has been used as a wing-back. However, for a club like Real Madrid, a regular starter and a player who fits into the squad and offers genuine quality is required, which may necessitate Madrid searching for new talent.

Carlo Ancelotti Eyeing for Davies

Mendy has contributed 6 goals and 10 assists in 179 appearances for Real Madrid. They have won two Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, and several other trophies. Still, his contract extension was a surprise, especially with Real Madrid’s long-standing interest in Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. The 23-year-old Canadian left-back is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and despite Bayern’s efforts to renew his deal, no agreement has been reached.

While earlier reports of a verbal agreement between Real Madrid and Davies proved inaccurate, the club remains interested in the defender. Carlo Ancelotti’s team held off pursuing Davies during the summer transfer window, hoping to secure him on a free transfer next year. If Davies joins Real Madrid in 2025, it could signal the end of Mendy’s time at the club.
