Opinion: Dallas Mavericks May Not Achieve a Lot Of Success

The Dallas Mavericks enter a critical 2024-2025 season.

How much success will the Dallas Mavericks achieve in the 2024-25 NBA season? Most recently, the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals in June 2024 for the first time since 2011. The Mavericks’ first Finals appearance was in 2006 when they took on the Miami Heat, lost in six games, and blew a 2-0 series lead.

The 2023-24 Dallas Mavericks roster could be described as improved, and one could thank Kyrie Irving for playing a full season in Dallas. Irving has been playing for the Mavericks since February 2023, a disappointing season when the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019. But Irving isn’t the only NBA player on the roster. There’s more to the team’s current situation than meets the eye, so feel free to read for further information.

Dallas Mavericks Embrace Pressure

On Monday, the Dallas Mavericks held a media day for local and national reporters at the team’s practice facility in Dallas. After media day, the Mavericks traveled to Las Vegas for a three-day training camp on the UNLV campus between Tuesday and Thursday.

According to FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth, the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly embracing the pressure while trying to avoid running from the expectations. Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd told reporters, “This is a different team. We have to be hungry, we haven’t done anything. We came in second … The expectations are extremely high and I think everyone is comfortable with that. We’re not going to run from the expectations.”

Kidd’s statement can be described as upbeat and optimistic, but the Mavericks can only embrace so much pressure. The Mavericks have had their backs against the wall in the past, including the 3-0 deficit in the 2024 NBA Finals as the most recent instance. The Mavericks’ offseason additions of Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes can work out. However, Thompson is arguably the biggest question mark due to his injuries, inconsistencies, and lack of high-quality defense.

Mavericks’ Potential Sixth Man

Klay Thompson can be the Dallas Mavericks’ potential sixth man in the 2024-25 NBA season. Thompson is reportedly excited to take the floor in a new city, Dallas. However, Thompson’s possible new title as the “sixth man” isn’t something he should be proud of. He can blur the line between a starter and a substitute, which isn’t good, as he has grown accustomed to being a starter in the Bay Area.

Mavericks Possible Moves

The Dallas Mavericks made some changes in the offseason, but aren’t done yet. On Monday, Kidd told reporters he’ll tinker with the Mavericks’ starting lineup this upcoming season. Kidd added he’ll likely start Dereck Lively II with the first unit to see how it goes.

As the Mavericks’ upcoming season approaches, takes have been appearing left and right, including a hot take of Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, who had the Mavericks out of the NBA Playoffs before the Western Conference Finals. Pincus’ hot take is 100% hot, as some, if not most, individuals can disagree with it and perhaps see it as disrespectful.

In my opinion, the Dallas Mavericks will make the NBA Playoffs and advance to the Western Conference Finals. But I’m unsure if a Mavericks’ attempt to return to the NBA Finals can be possible, as the Boston Celtics are reportedly hungry for a repeat NBA title due to a summer of snubs.
