Carlos Alcaraz To face Jannik Sinner In China Open Final

Carlos Alcaraz faces Jannik Sinner in a marquee final in China.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are going to have a blockbuster China Open final in Beijing. After five consecutive meetings in semifinals, they will face each other in a final for the first time in two years. These two young rivals split the Grand Slam titles this year. Sinner won the Australian Open and US Open. Alcaraz conquered the French Open and Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old Alcaraz has won both of their matches this season, including a five-set victory in the French Open semifinals. He also had surpassed Sinner with a record of 7-1 against ATP top-five opponents this year after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal. But Sinner defeated Alcaraz on his way to winning the China Open last season. How will this match unfold?

Alcaraz Record Surpasses Sinner’s

Carlos Alcaraz delivered a superb performance to prevail 7-5, 6-3 against World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing. Alcaraz now holds the most wins against ATP top-five opponents this year. Three of Alcaraz’s top five wins this year have come against Medvedev.

The four-time Grand Slam champion grabbed his two wins against Sinner, while he has earned one against both Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic. The only loss he had against a top five player was in the Paris Olympic Games final against Djokovic. Despite the early loss he had in the US Open, he has won each of his last eight tour-level matches. He is also in strong form to finish the year as world number one.

Sinner Has Been the Best Player

The Italian Jannik Sinner has been the best player in the world since the turn of the year. The China Open defending champion beat Bu Yunchaokete 6-3, 7-6 (3) to extend his winning streak to 15 matches. Last year, he overcame Medvedev to clinch the title in Beijing. Sinner has won four of his nine head-to-head meetings with final opponent Alcaraz. He beat Alcaraz in their only previous final clash for the Umag Trophy in 2022.

Sinner has won 15 straight matches going back to the start of the Cincinnati Open in August. He has also claimed 50 consecutive wins against players outside the world’s top 20. The 23-year-old Sinner realizes his meeting with Alcaraz in the final is going to be completely different. “We know each other very well. It’s going to be tactical, but I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Breaking Down the Match

Alcaraz and Sinner will do battle for the 10th time in the final match of the China Open. Alcaraz has returned to his best following a shocking second-round exit at the US Open. Sinner, meanwhile, continues to shrug off the news he could face a doping ban after the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed against the finding of no fault or negligence in his case.

The Spanish Alcaraz leads the head-to-head against Sinner 5-4 after winning both meetings in 2024. He snapped Sinner’s 19-match winning streak in the Indian Wells semifinals. Most recently he won a five-set semifinal clash at the French Open in June.
