Graham Potter Says Manchester United Not an ‘Impossible Job’

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has weighed in on the scrutiny surrounding Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag, dismissing the notion that leading the club is an “impossible job” despite the pressure from poor results. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Potter reflected on the realities of managing a big club like United and how quickly the tide can turn following disappointing performances.

“I don’t think anything is impossible, but obviously jobs are difficult. That’s the reality of life in the Premier League. If you are a big club like Manchester United, then it’s going to come under scrutiny,” He told Sky Sports. He added that while results are often the focal point, there are times when context needs to be considered.

“Sometimes you have to look past the results and performances. They have missed a lot of chances. Sometimes teams go through that. You think you can perform your XG, you don’t, and then you get a bad day like yesterday, and all of a sudden, the clouds can come over pretty quickly, and that’s what they have to face,” Potter continued, offering a more nuanced view of United’s struggles.

A Rough Start For The Red Devils

Manchester United have endured a rough start to the season, with mounting pressure on Erik ten Hag following consecutive defeats and questions over his tactical approach. The Red Devils’ recent 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford has led to widespread calls from fans and pundits for a change in management.

Potter, who faced his own share of scrutiny during his time at Chelsea, also provided insight into what it’s like to manage a club under intense pressure. Reflecting on his last outing at Stamford Bridge where he was eventually sacked by the club after a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, he acknowledged the emotional toll of the job.

“Football is about emotions, it’s about feelings. Fans are hurting, they want to have answers, they want to blame somebody, and sometimes it’s the manager. Sometimes we make mistakes, and we’re not perfect, but it’s part of the job. It’s part of what we signed up for. I’m sure Erik will say the same,” Graham Potter said. He also noted that managing Manchester United comes with a unique set of expectations, and criticism is inevitable when results falter. “If you don’t win or you don’t play well, or you lose, then people are going to be critical.”

Graham Potter Dismisses Rumors Of Manchester United Job

When asked about rumors that Manchester United had conversations with other coaches over the summer regarding a potential replacement for Ten Hag, Graham Potter was quick to dismiss the speculation. He addressed the media reports linking him to various managerial roles, including United.

What I have read so far in the media, a lot of it is untrue and false. I think I’m the only coach in world football that has been linked with Stoke City and Napoli in the same week, so I take what the media says with a pinch of salt,” Potter clarified. He added that while he has had conversations with various people, he prefers to keep those discussions private.
