The USU Women’s tennis team has wrapped up their weekend at the Colorado State Jon Messick Invitational while the men also did well at the Air Force-hosted Bedford Cup over the weekend. Freshman Eliot Nobel came into his match, posting a 2-1 record in singles and a 2-1 in doubles with sophomore teammate Keanu Rigby.
For the women, Sophomore Niyati Kukreti won her consolation final in Flight D. At the same time, junior Magdalena Nunez Pureco made it to the finals in a draw in Flight E. Then junior transfer Olivia Halvorsen with freshman Ana Sabikova made it to the final in their consolation brackets. This is how both teams did so well.
Tennis Tournament Players From All Over
Over the weekend, USU women’s tennis played against Air Force, Weber State, Iowa State, Oregon, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The men competed against Boise State, New Mexico State, BYU, Idaho, Northern Arizona, Montana, Nevada, and Denver.
Utah State senior Sergi Micó Fenollar captured the singles title as the No. 3 seed with a straight sets victory in the finals at the 67th Annual Men’s Tennis Intercollegiate Championships, held here this past weekend. Micó Fenollar secured a wildcard entry into an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event with the win. Micó Fenollar clinched the singles title in the championship match with a commanding straight-sets win (6-1, 6-4) over top-seeded Neo Niedner of San Diego.
On the First Day
Aggie Rigby gave the men a great start on the tournament’s first day, winning three sets in the East bracket round of 16. The ladies secured six singles victories, as well as three doubles wins in consolation brackets. Nunez Pureco captured a hard-fought three-set victory in the main draw of Flight E, while Kukreti advanced in straight sets in the quarterfinals of Flight D’s consolation draw.
Halvorsen and Sabikova finished the day 1-1, each earning wins in their respective consolation quarterfinals. Senior David Martirosian and Micó Fenollar advanced with wins in the round of 32, while sophomore Mohammad Alkotop finished the day 1-1.
Day Number Two
On the second day, freshmen Dmitri Goubin and Nobel won their singles matches, with Goubin winning in three sets and Nobel winning in straight sets. Rigby, however, lost in his singles quarterfinals match. Aggie ladies Kukreti, Halvorsen, Sabikova, and Nunez Pureco received byes, advancing them to their respective finals. Micó Fenollar cruised to a straight-sets victory in the singles round 16 (6-3, 6-3). Freshman Roman Venger and Alkotop also secured wins in the singles round 32. In doubles action, the pair of Micó Fenollar and Venger posted a victory in the round of 16 to advance.
3rd and Final Day
On the final day, Kukreti claimed the consolation title in Flight D with a straight-sets victory, while Nunez Pureco, Halvorsen, and Sabikova fell short in their final matches. On the men’s final day, Utah State recorded two more wins, one in singles and one in doubles. Nobel earned a hard-fought singles victory in three sets, while Rigby and Nobel teamed up to win their doubles match 6-4. Micó Fenollar dominated the singles quarterfinals, winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-2), before securing a semifinal victory, also in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). In doubles, Micó Fenollar and Venger won their quarterfinal match, which was decided by a tiebreak (7-6(4)). Micó Fenollar and Venger fell in their quarterfinal doubles match.
USU will return to action next week at the Mountain West Conference Individual Championships, held from Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Sunday, Oct. 6. The Aggie gentlemen will split their squad next week, competing at both the Idaho State Invitational from Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 2-4, and at the Mountain West Conference Individuals in Las Vegas, Nevada, from Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 2-5.
