Mohammad Yousuf Steps Down As Pakistan Cricket Team Selector

The new Pakistan men’s selection committee has been reduced even more, with Mohammad Yousuf retired. Yousuf got away with the selection committee’s update following his poor World Cup performance, but he will quit the national team before the Champions Trophy, which will be held at home in 2025. Without any question, Pakistan has had a tough time in international cricket recently, losing five Tests in a row.

Despite his international prowess as a batter, Yousuf’s tenure as a selector has not been remarkable or successful. The PCB has yet to name a successor to Yousuf in the job. Wahab Riaz, who was demoted to chief selector before the July reorganization, was succeeded by Mohammad Yousuf Since 2022, there has been instability in the chief selector position, and Yousuf’s replacement is expected to be the ninth different individual in the last three years.

Mohammad Yousuf one of the committee’s five remaining voting members, announced his resignation in a post on X (previously Twitter) for “personal reasons”. Serving this wonderful squad has been a tremendous privilege, and I am happy to have contributed to Pakistan cricket’s growth and success,” the former cricketer stated. “I have complete faith in our players’ talent and spirit, and I wish them all the best as they continue to strive for greatness.”

A PCB statement complimented Mohammad Yousuf on his services and announced that he had “voluntarily stepped down” to focus on other important obligations within the cricket body”. Comings and goings in Pakistan’s selectorial establishment are not new, but they have been particularly tumultuous in recent months. Wahab Riaz was appointed head selector late last year.

He oversaw a series of failures against Australia and New Zealand, as well as a dramatic disagreement with Haris Rauf, which resulted in the fast bowler’s key contracts being ripped up and then restored a few weeks later. In March, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced the formation of a new selection committee consisting of seven members and no top selector.

Yousuf’s Resignation Explained

Following Pakistan’s catastrophic first-round loss in the T20 World Cup in June, the PCB fired Wahab and Abdul Razzaq and did not replace them. It reduced the committee’s voting members to the captains, coaches, Asad Shafiq, and Mohammad Yousuf. With Yousuf’s resignation and no news on who would replace him, Shafiq is the only voting member remaining on the selection committee outside the captains and coaches.

Recently, Shafiq was tired of being mocked in the media and on social media regularly and decided it would be best to focus solely on teaching. Mohammad Yousuf will remain a batting instructor at the High Performance Centre. The committee will declare the squad for the remaining Test series against England, following the public release of the squad for the first Test in Multan on October 7.

Mohammad Yousuf only became Pakistan’s selector in March 2024, and he oversaw the national team’s dismal run of form, It includes a group stage exit in the T20 World Cup and a 2-0 home Test series defeat by Bangladesh. Pakistan will attempt to put the drama and upheaval behind them as they prepare to host England for their forthcoming Test series, with Shan Masood staying as Test captain.
