Khalil Rountree will fight Alex Pereira in October at UFC 307. While Rountree was not able to defeat all the ranked contenders standing in line to fight the title holder, most of the fans think that he would be an ideal match for “Poatan.” But on the other side, the Brazilian from the Jungles of Brazil has been taking out great fighters with his left hooks and kicks, and for Rountree, after adding more of the Muay Thai strikes to his striking, he has been rather good, which would be helpful in a fight against Alex Pereira.
At UFC 307, his next bout, Pereira, the current light-heavyweight champion, intends to employ more wrestling. To the astonishment of many, Khalil Rountree’s coach, John Wood, does as well. During the recent interview with ESPN, Wood did not hide his confidence in his ideas about the possible matchup.
Striking of Alex Pereira and Rountree
Wood is still talking about Merab Dvalishvili, his student, defeating Sean O’Malley at UFC 306. While discussing Rountree’s upcoming UFC 307, he made it clear that, like his other student Dvalishvili, against whom “Suga” O’Malley seemed invincible as a striker, until Dvalishvili uncovered the chink in his metal.
Khalil Rountree Jr. said he had not attempted a takedown in his career when he spoke to ‘The Schmo’. The 34-year-old said that he is coming for a striking battle with the Brazilian, and he will not accept any ducking and grappling, but his main priority would be striking. Anthony Smith spoke with Michael Bisping about the fight in a recent video on his YouTube channel. In his last match, Smith competed against ‘The War Horse,’ and Smith highly rates him. Still, he does not think that either of these fighters will look for takedowns in the next fight they have against each other.
Coach of Khalil Rountree
Rountree probably will not use grappling like Dvalishvili to defend against his opponent’s attacks. Wood mentioned that Pereira’s striking can appear clumsy and slightly strange; however, it works well. First of all, Pereira has very strong knockout rates that made his opponents careful. Further, Wood narrows down the way he believes that the Brazilian misleads his opponents to one’s close range with some unlikely methods, which could sum up a fight rapidly.
Anthony Wood said this about the upcoming fight:
“One, the guy’s got hammers for hands. Two, I think he lulls people into that like, you know, ‘hey, I’m making mistakes’ and you know, ‘come and get me.’ And then, boop! You’re waking up on the canvas,” Wood continued,” No matter sometimes how ugly things might look or maybe unconventional but unconventional works just as well as conventional, if you know what you’re doing.”
Final Thoughts
UFC 307 is going to be much more exciting than UFC 306 because Alex Pereira, famously known for his signature word “Chama,” is adored a lot by his fans and the UFC world. Plus, seeing ‘Poaton’ in the Octagon is another level of fun that will make the crowd go crazy. This match is going to be unpredictable because both of them are really powerful fighters.
Different things make each of the fighters special, but overall they both are strikers, and in most of their professional journeys, they have kept the striking style. But in this fight, the match could go to the ground. What are your thoughts about the upcoming fight of Alex Pereira against Khalil Rountree?
