SEC clashes have begun. The Texas Longhorns seized the lead early on and demolished Mississippi State 35-13. Quarterback Arch Manning took the reins for Texas’ first SEC showdown. Despite a slow start, the Longhorns finally found their rhythm in the second half. Several players from the injury report were present throughout the game. Jaydon Blue and Tre Wisner had spectacular games along with the receiving corps. Mississippi State had a good performance by freshman quarterback Van Buren. However, the Bulldogs were ultimately unable to halt the Texas Longhorns’ stampede.
Week 5 Recap – Texas Maintains Strong Start
1st Quarter
The first quarter started out smoothly enough, with Arch Manning taking the field for an injured Ewers. He went 4 for 4 and threw the Texas Longhorns’ first touchdown this quarter. Running Back Jaydon Blue had a monster first quarter and a half. Blue scored the 1-yard touchdown putting the Longhorns ahead 7-0. The Texas Longhorns took the lead early with a touchdown and held on tight. The second half saw more scoring action than the first.
2nd Quarter
Mississippi State managed to sack Arch Manning and get on the scoreboard this quarter. They would later capitalize on a failed pass from Manning to Cook II. Although another field goal instead of a touchdown, the Bulldogs added more points, making it 6-7. The Texas Longhorns surged ahead when Manning fired off a rocket to DeAndre Moore, Jr. The touchdown pass made it 14-6 right before the half.
3rd Quarter
Second-half drives did not begin well for the Texas Longhorns. A fumble and a turnover on downs started them off. Luckily Edge Rusher Colin Simmons charged forward and strip sacked Mississippi State’s Quarterback Van Buren. Silas Bolden jumped in to move Texas several yards forward. The Texas Longhorns gained 31 yards on a pass from Manning to Wide Receiver Johntay Cook II. Mississippi called the timeout, and things went downhill from there.
After the reset for another Texas drive, Arch Manning saw an opening and took it. He immediately rushed the ball again and was halted just shy of the goal line. This led to a review after Manning’s elbow made it to the pylon. It was eventually determined Arch’s elbow and knee hit the ground at the same time.
The call stood at first and goal until Running Back Tre Wisner carried it across. In another stroke of misfortune, the touchdown was reversed. Refs claimed Wisner’s knee was down before the goal line. After a failed quarterback sneak, a timeout, and a play clock reset, Texas tried again. This time the quarterback sneak was successful, with Arch Manning recording another 1-yard touchdown.
4th Quarter
The fourth quarter started off well for Texas at 21-6 and a deep sack by Longhorn Colton Vasek. Mississippi State QB Van Buren had trouble getting started with several delays of game penalties. Texas Longhorns Running Back Tre Wisner turned on the gas for a 26-yard run. Manning would find Jerrick Gibson for his next three plays, gaining significant ground.
It would ultimately fall to Tre Wisner -avoiding tackles- to again cross the finish line. In a cruel twist of fate, Wisner’s touchdown was again snatched by a 10-yard penalty. Ryan Wingo, returning to the game with a knee brace, ran it down next. Wide Receiver Matthew Golden made strong gains, recording 52 yards the entire game. Arch Manning ultimately launched a deep pass to DeAndre Moore, Jr. who scored, making it 28-6.
Mississippi State would not go quietly into that good night. After a 46-yard reception by Mississippi State, their quarterback scored a 12-yard rushing touchdown. At 28-13, with 6 minutes left, Manning found Wisner twice until Bond took over. Isaiah Bond recorded a 26-yard rushing touchdown, and it was all over for the Bulldogs.
Final Thoughts
The Texas Longhorns record now stands at 5-0. They have managed to pull off a win while getting Quinn Ewers an extra rest. Arch stepped into his role well, scoring several touchdowns. Several players who were previously listed as Questionable as late as Thursday had strong showings. Their defensive line recorded their highest number of sacks (7) so far this year.
Last quarter saw the most action by far, with Texas scoring twice and Mississippi State answering. After all that, heading into the OU game -especially after an off week- looks promising. The Texas Longhorns will be in the best position possible to continue their SEC stampede.
