Detroit Lions announced that they are placing Safety, Iffy Melifonwu on Injured Reserve. The former third round pick from Syracuse was looking to make his season debut but that will be put on hold. Melifonwu was entering his fourth season with the Lions after playing his first full season with the team last year. He has 62 career tackles and two interceptions. Iffy Melifonwu will miss some time with an ankle injury. How long will he miss and how the Lions fare in his absence?
What Iffy Melifonwu’s Injury Means To Detroit
Iffy Melifonwu was placed on Injured Reserve on Saturday, two days before the Lions host the undefeated Seattle Seahawks. He plays safety as a backup role to the young and upcoming, Brian Branch. Branch and fellow Safety, Kerby Joseph will have their hands full with Quarterback Geno Smith and his collection of weapons. Expect backup Brandon Joseph to get some playing time, replacing the injured Melifonwu. The Lions defense as a whole has been good through three games so far only averaging 17.6 points surrendered per game.
Final Thoughts
With the injury to Iffy Melifonwu, the Lions defensive back position just became a little thinner. A major key to the game coming up on Monday Night Football for Detroit, the Lions must contain Seattle’s “Big Three” which includes DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The Lions’ young core of defensive backs will be up for the challenge. Detroit looks to put the first loss in the Seahawks column to move to 3-1 in the season. Look for the Lions to pound the rock and control the clock to keep Seattle’s explosive offense off the field.
