Pep Guardiola Officially Reveals ‘Rodri Season is Over’

Pep Guardiola spoke ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Newcastle for Matchday 6. The Spaniard officially confirmed the length of the injury their star midfielder Rodri who was removed in their last game against Arsenal.

Rodri was revealed to have torn his ACL during the Arsenal game. Pep Guardiola confirmed that the Spanish midfield maestro’s season is over as it’ll take a whole season for him to recover and attain fitness. What’s Ahead for the City’s gaffer is for him to seek other possibilities as the season progresses.

As it stands, a lot of games await Man City and Pep Guardiola and it’ll be crucial for the club to find a replacement and also a substitute for the replacement for them to remain in contention for the major tournament.

The Man City star was subbed during halftime of the European Cup final involving Spain and England, this was due to a minor injury. Since then the 28-year-old has been struggling with his fitness. During the pre-season, he was left out and he went on a recovery process three games into the season, Pep Guardiola had rested the Spaniard.

Rodri eventually got his first full start in Man City’s win against Brentford. With this Pep Guardiola believed Rodri was ready for the season ahead. And with a big game lying in wait for them, he was ready for his proper return to the Premier League. A few minutes into the game with City already leading 1nil, Rodri went into the ground, wreathing in pain. He was in a contest with Thomas Partey during a corner and a light nudge from the Ghanaian somehow threw him off his foot. He left the game. And now, almost a week later Pep Guardiola confirms the Spaniard’s season is over.

Pep Guardiola on Rodri’s Fitness

The Spanish Coach officially broke the news about the Man City star’s fitness, announcing he will be out of the season. He also confirmed another star midfielder in the name of Kevin De Bruyne will also miss Man City’s clash against Newcastle.

Pep said: “Surgery this morning, ACL. Next season he will be here. This season is over. Unfortunately, we got the worst [news] but these things happen. We will be there to support him in his recovery step-by-step. What he gives us, we don’t have a similar player, But the others can all together replace what Rodri has given since his arrival to us. We will have to do it as a team and find a way to play a lot of matches without an important player for us.

Pep Guardiola on Replacement

The City Gaffer also talked about his plans to replace Rodri this season. He mentioned names like Kovacic, Gundogan, and John Stones helping out in filling the big gap left by the midfield maestro.

Pep Guardiola said: “Mateo Kovacic and I have a few more. Ilkay Gündogan can play in that position, and John Stones [has] too. We have alternatives We will see, We talked today with [sporting director] Txiki [Begiristain] and we’ll see how it’s going. We don’t have to decide tomorrow, right? We have time to see potential problems we have, and we’ll see.”
