3 Keys to Victory for the Texans Against the Jaguars

Houston Texans

The Texans have a unique opportunity to put themselves further ahead in the AFC South on Sunday. They play the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars, who are still looking for their first win of the year. That being said, the Texans also have several injuries, most notably Joe Mixon and Tank Dell, so beating the Jags might not be as easy as it looks.

Feed Nico Collins and Cam Akers

Plain and simple: the Texans are undefeated this year when Nico Collins gets 100 yards or over. Collins was only held to 86 yards against the Vikings in a game where the Texans only scored once. The key to this offense is Collins, and even though Diggs is looking for another good performance, the Texans should hope to give Collins more targets against the Jaguars.

Due to his injury, Joe Mixon has been ruled week to week. Since he did not practice on Wednesday, though, it looks like he might not be suitable for Sunday. That means that Cam Akers would be the starting running back. Akers only rushed for 21 yards against the Vikings, but that doesn’t mean they should stop giving him the ball. Akers is still a capable running back, and even if he can’t move the chains, he will make easier third downs for C.J. Stroud to convert.

Dial up Pressure Often

Trevor Lawrence took four sacks and nine hits in his loss against the Bills. If the Texans can match this stat line, then they can cripple the Jaguars’ offensive attack. Lawrence, in general, hasn’t had the best of seasons so far; he only has 2 TDs to 1 interception and has been held under 200 yards for two of his three games. If the Texans’ pass rush can rattle Lawrence, he won’t be having a comeback performance on Sunday.

A big part of pressuring Trevor Lawrence in this matchup is keeping him to third and longs. This can’t happen, though, unless they stop Etienne from getting free room to work with. Etienne has yet to break 100 yards in a game this season, but that can change on any Sunday. The Texans can’t afford to have Etienne perform like Aaron Jones did when they played the Vikings.

Clean up the Penalties

Penalties, specifically false starts, were a big contributing factor to the Texans’ loss to the Vikings in week 3. Even if it means using more simple cadences, the Texans should be trying to clean up that part of the game. The Texans still have an elite offense, but they can’t score points if they’re losing five yards on every play.
