The Philadelphia Mayor, Cherelle Parker, continues to negotiate a deal for the approval of a new 76ers arena in Center City. This week, Parker held a press conference to relay to the public the outcome of the negotiations with the Philadelphia 76ers. Also, the negotiation focused on some of the negative impacts of the project. Thus, what solution did these parties come to?
Philadelphia 76ers Agreements With Major Parker
The Philadelphia 76ers met with Mayor Cherelle Parker to finalize the agreement to stay in Philly. Last week, Mayor Parker announced that the Sixers will stay in Philly. Also, she proposed to go into more detail about the “historical agreement” the following week.
The Philadelphia 76ers planned to leave Wells Fargo Center for a new location in Philly. Yet, the residents of that area, Chinatown, opposed the project. Chinatown opposed the project due to its negative economic and cultural impact on the community. Due to the delay in agreement, the Sixers franchise aspired to leave Philadelphia for New Jersey, which former Eagles Center Jason Kelce condemned. Yet, Mayor Parker agreed with the basketball franchise to stay in Philly.
In the press conference, Philly’s 100th Mayor expressed her feelings about the Sixers staying in Philadelphia. Also, she went into further details about the agreement. Despite the disagreement from the people of Chinatown, Mayor Parker called this deal a “historical agreement”
Further Details From Press Conference
Mayor Parker proposed that Philadelphia will keep the Sixers franchise till 2061. Thus, throughout the 30 years of this agreement, the city will benefit well from this project. The 51-year-old politician emphasized the economic benefits of the project especially for Chinatown residents. Thus, she provided some solutions to the negative impacts of the project on adjacent communities.
After Mayor Parker announced her support for building the new arena near Chinatown, the locals concluded the franchise would demand public funds to commence this project. Yet, Parker debunked that notion as she expressed that the Sixers will finance the $1.9 billion project without public city funds. Also, the Sixers will make a use and occupancy payment of $6 million for 30 years.
Mayor Parker’s Solutions
Mayor Parker also addressed the widespread misinformation on the proposed location of the new arena. She claimed that some Philadelphians thought the new arena would be in Chinatown. Thus, she stressed that the project is adjacent to Chinatown. Also, there would not be the demolition of any building.
She also told the press that the project offers $50 million in community benefit agreement. The community benefit agreement cuts across housing, public safety, businesses, and transportation. Also, more of this community benefit agreement will go to the Chinatown residents.
Mayor Parker expressed her desire to preserve the culture of Chinatown people. To conclude on the benefits of the new arena in Center City, the mayor proposed to have a community meeting to listen to people’s opinions about the proposal update. Also, she expressed her desire to bring a WNBA team to Philadelphia when the new arena becomes functional.
