Tottenham Hotspur ‘Make Decision’ on Son Contract Extension

Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly decided on the one-year extension option for Son Heung-min’s contract. Currently, the South Korean forward could leave for free at the end of the season, as he is in the final year of his deal with the club.

If Son does not sign a new contract before January, he would be free to negotiate with foreign clubs, with the Saudi Pro League said to be interested. Despite being 32 and turning 33 next July, Son remains integral to manager Ange Postecoglou’s system, contributing two goals and two assists in five Premier League games this season.

According to the Evening Standard, Spurs are set to trigger the one-year extension clause in Son’s contract, ensuring he stays at the club until the summer of 2026. It remains unclear whether this short-term extension will lead to a longer deal, but at the very least, it protects his value.

If Son completes his contract after the extension, he will have spent 11 years at Tottenham, having joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for 30 million euros (£25.1m). In that time, he has scored 164 goals and provided 86 assists in 414 appearances, making him Tottenham’s highest-scoring non-English player and ranking him fifth in the club’s all-time scorers list.

The future of Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min has become a major talking point in the Premier League, as his contract is set to expire in June 2024. Fans are eager to see whether he will extend his stay or move to a new club.

What Son Said on Contract Extension

During a press conference ahead of Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League match against Qarabağ, Son Heung-min addressed questions about his contract, stating, “We haven’t discussed anything yet.” He added, “I’m fully focused on this season and want to win something for the club that everyone here deserves.” Son also hinted at uncertainty, saying, “In the future, you never know what will happen, but I’ll give everything for this club.”

Son made a similar remark when asked if he would finish his career at Tottenham. He said, “The future is unpredictable. Even if I eventually leave, I hope to see you all smiling and want to be remembered as a club legend.”

Son Drawing Interest From Other European and Saudi Clubs

Interest in Son Heung-min has grown, with European and Saudi Arabian clubs reportedly vying for his signature. Atlético Madrid is rumored to be preparing to sign Son on a free transfer next season, according to Spanish media outlet Fichajes. The club has already made contact with Son’s representatives. Atlético Madrid, one of La Liga’s top three clubs, has won 11 league titles and three UEFA Europa League trophies, making it an attractive option for Son, who has yet to win a major European title.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Pro League continues to lure Son with lucrative offers. Last year, ESPN reported that Al-Ittihad offered him a €60 million deal, with other clubs like Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal also showing interest.
