Caitlin Clark’s Rookie Season Has Officially Come to a Close

WNBA rookie sensation Caitlin Clark’s season has officially come to a close. On Wednesday night the Indiana Fever played the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the WNBA playoffs and lost the best of three series. Her last shot of the season was from 27 feet out as the ball hit off the back of the rim with 15 seconds left. Clark has broken all kinds of WNBA records and this is only the beginning of her WNBA career. The Indiana Fever selected Clark in the first round of the 2024 WNBA draft.

Caitlin Clark has brought a lot to the WNBA as a rookie, she has brought in ticket sales, viewers, and fans to the WNBA. To name a few record-breaking records Clark has also broken across the WNBA:

  • Single-game assist record Clark broke the WNBA single-game assist record with 19 assists
  • Rookie record for points in a season: Clark broke the rookie record for points in a season
  • Single-season assist record: Clark broke the WNBA single-season assist record with 337 assists, surpassing Alyssa Thomas’ previous record.
  • Rookie record for three-pointers in a season: Clark set the rookie record for 3-pointers in a season
  • WNBA rookie three-point record: Clark broke the WNBA rookie three-point record during a win over Connecticut

Clark ended up setting regular-season WNBA records for assists in a season (337), points scored or assisted on in a season (1,520), points by a rookie (769), and three-point field goals by a rookie (122). On Wednesday night, she scored or assisted on 45 points, the most by a rookie in a playoff game in WNBA history. Caitlin Clark has done so much for the Indiana Fever franchise. The Fever reached the playoffs for the first time since 2016, with Clark named first-team All-WNBA and expected to win Rookie of the Year honors.

The Indiana Fever has a young team and Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell, and Lexie Hull slowly built chemistry with each other after the Olympic break. Caitlin Clark played much better and Mitchell’s production exploded, averaging nearly 25 points over the final 13 games. Coach Christie Sides settled on a consistent rotation and the team started gaining trust and chemistry and in return winning games after a poor 1-8 start to the season. The Fever did end up 20-20 after the end of the season and finished 6th.

What Is Next for Caitlin Clark this Offseason?

So what will Caitlin Clark do this offseason? Not a whole lot. She mentioned that she is not competing overseas. She will take some time to hit the reset button during the offseason. As Clark said, “I feel like basketball has really consumed my life for a year. So I feel like it’ll be good for me to kind of reflect back on everything that’s happened.” She has no plans to pick up a basketball in the coming weeks. But she jokingly said “maybe ill become a professional golfer.
