Florida Panthers Forward Tomas Nosek is expected to miss some time with an upper-body injury he sustained during the Nashville Predators preseason game. The unfortunate injury occurred early in the first period of Game 2 when Predators Defenseman Jeremy Lauzon tripped Nosek and sent him flying into the end boards. Nosek is preparing for his first season with the Florida Panthers. He was acquired by the New Jersey Devils in the offseason and signed a one-year deal. He is expected to be playing on the Panthers’ fourth line. How will he fare once he is healthy?
Tomas Nosek Expected To Miss Time
Head Coach Paul Maurice said “It’s going to take a few days for us to know the extent of this injury and how fast he heals,” after Tuesday’s practice at Baptist Health IcePlex. “This is not going to be short term. We’re looking at weeks, not days with where we are right now.” Maurice also reported that the injury was not a concussion. Tomas Nosek is expected to be Florida’s fourth-line center.
He won 51.9% of face-offs in the 2023-2024 season. With Nosek’s availability for Opening Night up in the air, other players will have to step up. As Maurice said, “For all of those guys, there’s now an opportunity.” This fourth line center position is now wide open since Tomas Nosek’s injury. Other newcomers like Jesper Boqvist and AJ Greer can take the fourth line center position if Tomas Nosek is not ready for the first game of the season.
The Panthers also have rookie Patrick Giles, who spent the past two seasons at Charlotte of the American Hockey League. Giles scored a goal and added an assist in Game 2 of the doubleheader against Nashville while centering a line with Jonah Gadjovich and Josh Davies. Giles has had a strong training camp and a good outing this preseason for the Panthers. It will depend on how the Panthers want to approach the position now that Tomas Nosek is sidelined.
More Related Injuries
The Florida Panthers are also dealing with rookie Forward Mackie Samoskevich’s injury. Samoskevish re-aggravated the upper-body injury he entered camp with and now likely won’t make his camp debut until later this week. He was the Florida Panthers first round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He played seven games for the Panthers during the 2023-24 season. Also, Forward Justin Sourdif left practice Tuesday after sliding into the boards.
Samoskevich and Sourdif are both players who are to fill Florida’s third line which features Forwards Eetu Luostarinen and Anton Lundell. The Florida Panthers will take it day-by-day on the injuries that are happening to the newly acquired player Tomas Nosek and rookies Samoskevich and Sourdif who are expected to be playing on the Panthers third and fourth lines. The team has many questions as they begin their Stanley Cup title defense in a few weeks on October 8.
