Ange Postecoglu Reveals ‘Players May Take Things Into Their Own Hands’

Spurs

Ange Postecoglu has spoken ahead of Spurs’ home game in the Europa League against Qarabag. The Manager commented about his players’ fitness and the responsibility ahead of his team. During the weekend Tottenham Hotspur edged past Brentford in a 3-1 victory. Initially, they were a goal down in the early minutes after Mbeumo smashed in a Volley, however, they soon equalized and took control of the game. Goals from Dominick Solanke, Brennan Johnson, and James Maddison gave them a crucial victory.

Tottenham has been off and on this season. Prior to their Brentford win they had struggled against Arsenal eventually losing out to a painful 1 nil victory. Nevertheless, Brentford was a good morale booster after Arsenal’s loss. And Ange Postecoglu will hope his side can continue ahead of their Europa League clash against Qarabag.

In the press conference ahead of the Qarabag game, the Australian was asked about the words he said sometimes back about wanting his players to take things into their own hands. The Manager further elaborated on his words, explaining what he meant by the statement.

Postecoglu said: “I said players may take, I didn’t say they will. I said they may take things into their own hands. It’s about they’re the ones most affected, to be honest, so you would understand if they started to think about as a collective, how much are we going to have to continually not have a say in and it’s like anything in life I guess if you are affected. And it is the players who are affected. We have a responsibility as clubs, as managers as well that we protect our players as well. It’s the reason we have squads.”

He finally added saying: “We have to be mindful that we can’t on the one hand bemoan the fact we have so many games but we want to be in all competitions but we don’t use our squads because we end up complicit with that.

Ange Postecoglu on Injuries

The Australian gave his update on the fitness of his players and stated that the likes of Romero, Spence, and Reguilon would be unavailable for certain reasons.

He said: “Nothing else from the weekend in terms of injuries. Everyone has pulled up well, there are no issues there. Apart from the injuries, the obvious absences are Romero, Spence, and Reguilon, who trained today but for different reasons are ineligible.”

Postecoglu further added about his pleasure in returning to European competition, he spoke about how happy he was to play in the Europa League, and he is happy the team is progressing.

He added: “I am really pleased to be back there and excited to be back in it. I spoke about it last year that it was a real gap in our calendar and didn’t help us at certain times of the year not having regular football, that challenge of playing different types of opposition and exposing our whole squad to some meaningful game-time. And the worst thing was sitting around watching other teams play in it. It didn’t sit right with me so being back in a European competition is important.”

What’s Ahead for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur will host Qarabag in the league phase of the Europa League. Aftermath they’ll travel to Old Trafford to phase Manchester United in the weekend. The Weekend tie is expected to be a very tough game for Spurs, however Ange Postecoglu will be hoping his side can go into the game and deliver a beautiful result.
