The Buffalo Sabres arrived in Munich, Germany earlier this week for a contest against the Red Bull Munich hockey team. While the Rochester Americans and a group of young prospects continue the preseason for the Sabres in the States, Buffalo’s NHL roster will compete in the 2024 Global Series Challenge in Europe. The first game will take place at the SAP Garden in Munich, Germany on Friday, September 27 as Buffalo helps kick off the Grand Opening of the new arena. How will the team fare in this contest across the pond?
Final Test Before The Regular Season
Friday’s game against Red Bull will be the Sabres’ last chance to lock down opening night roster spots before the regular season kicks off on October 4. This group had two impressive wins on home ice earlier this week. A convincing 7-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins prospects on Saturday and a dominating 6-1 beat down over the Columbus Bluejackets opened the team’s impressive preseason. The team of prospects that were left back home will have three remaining preseason games, with the final one coming against the Detroit Red Wings on September 30.
Red Bull Munich Has An Impressive Resume
The Red Bull Munich hockey team is in the Deutsche Eishockey League and is regarded as one of the strongest teams in Europe. The Red Bull have won a remarkable four league titles since 2016 with their most recent one coming in the 2022-2023 season. The professional hockey team is mainly German-born players but includes skaters from Canada, Sweden, and the U.S. Head Coach Toni Soderholm has the team off to a strong 2-0 start to begin their season.
Sabres Will Head To Prague For Season Opener
Once the Buffalo Sabres wrap up the preseason in Germany, they will head to Prague, Czechia for back-to-back games against the New Jersey Devils. Devils Head Coach Sheldon Keefe will look to keep the team’s winning ways against the Sabres. Over the last ten games, the Devils have been 7-3 against the Sabres, and they took 2 out of 3 last season. As the season kicks off, Sabres’ Coach Lindy Ruff will see many familiar faces. Ruff spent nearly four years behind the Devils bench and led them to the playoffs in 2023.
Expectations Are High For A Strong Start
Carrying the burden of the longest active postseason drought has been getting old for fans, management, and players who love the Blue and Gold. Western New York has gone 13 straight years of missing out on the most exciting playoffs in sports. Lindy Ruff and the Sabres are off to a great start with two convincing preseason wins. Now it is time to show the NHL world that the Sabres are back and possibly grab four points in Europe. The team heads back to America for their first game on October 10 against the Kings.
