Florida Panthers Goalie Spencer Knight Is Back

Spencer Knight has returned for the upcoming season.

Goaltender Spencer Knight has not seen the ice since February 2023. Knight made the difficult decision to pause his professional hockey career and seek help in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program for issues he was having with Obsessive-compulsive disorder. Following treatment, Knight was finally ready to return to his hockey career. He spent the last season with the Florida Panthers’ AHL Charlotte Checkers. By the end of the regular season, Knight was playing like a top young goaltender again, looking the part as one of the best goalie prospects around.

Spencer Knight was drafted by the Panthers in the 2019 NHL draft. He was selected in the first round and the 13th overall pick by the Florida Panthers. How will his return to the ice go for the reigning Stanley Cup champions?

The question now arises will Spencer Knight be able to play again at the NHL level? Knight had a great outing in a preseason double-header game against the Nashville Predators. He had 19 saves on all 19 shots he faced until midway through the second period when Goaltender Cooper Black relieved him. There is no doubting Spencer Knight’s ability to play goaltender. If everything trends in the direction they are now, Knight will back up starting goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky this season.

Spencer Knight will have to adjust to the NHL’s demanding schedule. It will be challenging for the young goaltender on and off the ice this season. Head Coach Paul Maurice said of Knight after Sunday’s doubleheader, “He had a good year last year. It was good for him to go through an entire year pro. What he did tonight is the way he’s looked in training camp, so he looks strong.” As the NHL continues to get close, Knight will continue to improve his game while continuing to learn.

Expectations For Knight

Head Coach Paul Maurice also said, “He’s a young guy, and there’s so much to learn to that position, and I think he’s back on that curve. It is day after day, he continues to kind of learn to cope in the National League or in pro sports, and he looks very, very strong, so he’s done well.”

Florida Panthers fans will be excited to see their Goalie Spencer Knight back on the ice the season. Knight is loved by fans and is a great backup goalie. The Florida Panthers will continue their preseason games. Tomorrow the Cats are in Orlando to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning and will finish the preseason on October 5. The start of the season will be October 8 when the Panthers will face the Boston Bruins.
