Monday Night Raw Review: WWE Crowns New IC Champion | 09/24/2024

WWE Monday Night Raw - New IC Champion

Ontario, California brought us a wild WWE Monday Night Raw last night. The show was truly eventful in that it continued storylines, as we knew they would, heading into Bad Blood in early October. The storylines that we expected were more than satisfactory, but the story of a new champion was a bit of a surprise and will provide a new direction on Monday nights.

Monsters have become the name of the game on Monday Night Raw in this past month. WWE has found a gem in Big Bronson Reed. Raw now has another bonafide monster that can just destroy people at will. The current feud with Braun Strowman not only makes sense, but it is a program where the excited WWE fans have a destructive segment every week to look forward to.

This week, The Miz was set to take on Reed as revenge for the past week’s transgressions and for taking out R Truth. The match never started as Strowman attacked Reed before he entered the ring. This time, the action was in and around the ring and saw security guards go flying, get crushed, and get colossal tsunamis. Last Monster Standing is scheduled for next week between the two towering men.

Jey Uso faced Bron Breakker and is now the new Intercontinental Champion on Monday Night Raw. Triple H has been a force behind the scenes to make sure that champions have a sensible lengthy reign and that the titles need the champions, just as champions need the titles. So, it was a surprise for many that Uso was able to overcome Breakker last night to become the new champion.

Breakker had been treated and booked like he would hold the title almost as long as Gunther. Jey Uso proved that theory wrong last night and was able to overcome Breakker to become a celebrated new champion! Uso deserves the title, as he has not had a singles championship in fourteen years. Great short, but intense match.

Zayn Clears Hurdle in Pursuit of Gunther

Sami’s real interest in this one is getting to Gunther, the World Heavyweight Champion. Kaiser is no joke in the ring and should not be overlooked by Zayn. Kaiser looked great in this match-up and Zayn helped make him look good. The two seemed evenly matched. The action was what you would expect from these two, but perhaps a bit more intense.  Zayn hits a Helluva Kick for the win, but Gunther still tells him no to a world title shot, and then walks off.  A continuation of this story is sure in the following weeks.

Additional Highlights

Dragon Lee vs Carlito: It is exciting that Judgment Day has multiple foes at this point. Everyone else on the roster who is not them. Judgment Day and the LWO is a natural rivalry. Tonight featured Dragon Lee against Carlito, with added members of each faction joining at ringside. The match was fun but standard fare from these two. Dragon Lee was given the win to even out the loss to Dom Mysterio last week.

Rhea Ripley promo with Liv Morgan: Liv Morgan, Dom Mysterio, and Rhea Ripley opened the show by giving a promo to hype up their encounter at Bad Blood for the WWE Women’s World Championship. Liv and Dom were operating under the assumption that Ripley would not be cleared for the event. To Morgan and Mysterio’s surprise, Ripley said that she is fully cleared and that Adam Pearce has booked the match to include the requirement that Mysterio will be suspended above the ring in a shark cage!

Drew McIntyre addresses CM Punk: Both CM Punk and Drew McIntyre’s promos have become increasingly dark and serious over the past few weeks in their build to Bad Blood’s Hell in a Cell match. Drew was just as somber as Punk was last week and just as serious. McIntyre vowed to end Punk and it doesn’t matter what anyone says. They are both committed and both are willing to fight to the death. Cold and serious segment.

Raw Review

Dragon Lee vs Carlito: B-
This type of match in the past would be considered filler. These mid-card matches are no longer just filler when Judgement Day is involved. The group can somehow make every segment they are involved in interesting and feel important. This match gave the LWO some screen time and provided enough action among all of the superstars to make the match fun.

Sami Zayn vs Ludwig Kaiser: C+
WWE may have to manage Kaiser’s losses, as he has suffered a few as of late. That does not speak to how good that he looks in the ring, and there is a feeling that he will join the winning side of the equation soon. Zayn continues his quest to become the World Heavyweight Champion by defeating Kaiser and making it clear to Gunther that Sami is next up.

The Unholy Union vs Damage CTRL: B-
This match showed us that it is clear that Damage CTRL is the next contender for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn looked as good as they have in the past, but Iyo Sky and Kairi Sane were a touch better. Fyre and Dawn will need another program or have to reinvent themselves as they have lost to Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair, as well as Damage CTRL in the past two weeks.

The New Day vs The Creed Brothers: B+
This tag team match featured the Creeds finally getting over and getting the win, as the Alpha Academy is coming out of a program where they were continually terrorized by the Wyatt Sicks. The story about the rif between Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods was continued and even saw Woods get challenged by Rey Mysterio for next week when they ran into the LWO backstage. The Creeds looked good and deserved the win.

Jey Uso vs Bron Breakker for the Intercontinental Championship: A+
Jey Uso has done it.  Uso has become the new Intercontinental Champion! The match was intense from the get-go and featured plenty of spears and suicide dives to the outside. The difference here for Uso is that he didn’t lag and didn’t let up on Breakker. Putting Breakker through the barricade wall on the outside aided his final spear and then Uso Splash sequence in the corner once back in the ring. Uso’s popularity and newfound IC title is a great new direction for Monday Night Raw!
