Cincinnati Reds Fire Manager David Bell Before 2024 Season Ends

Cincinnati Reds, Ty France

With the 2024 regular season coming to a close, the Cincinnati Reds have already been eliminated from postseason contention. However, that does not mean they are not in the news as reports are saying that manager David Bell has been relieved of his duties and bench coach Freddie Benavides is going to act as the interim coach for the remaining five games of the season. Let’s discuss what this means going forward for the Cincinnati Reds to conclude the season.

Instead of waiting until the offseason, the Cincinnati Reds made the decision to fire manager David Bell. While that is a bit of a questionable move in itself, the franchise gave him a three-year extension right before the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline, so they are going to be eating some money here.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Nick Krall provided a comment on this decision.

“David provided the kind of steadiness that we needed in our clubhouse over the last few seasons. We felt a change was needed to move the Major League team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected.”

Krall is not wrong as the team are currently fourth in the NL Central with a 76-81 record, which is completely worse than the preseason expectations.

David Bell has been the manager of the Cincinnati Reds since the 2019 season and has not been able to really get much going as he posted a 409-456 record. They did make the postseason once during the 2020 COVID-shortened season but failed to score a single run in that series.

Who will the Cincinnati Reds target for their next manager?

While there are certainly a lot of candidates who can take the manager’s spot, two names seem to be popping up immediately. The first is the current interim manager Freddie Benavides. Giving him the interim title showcases that the team is at least liking what he is doing this season. The second option that is being thrown around is current Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. Baseball is going to see at least one manager change this offseason.
