New York Mets Defeat Philadelphia Phillies In Low-Scoring Game

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.

The New York Mets and Starting Pitcher Tylor Megill were under duress early on in tonight’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Third Baseman Alec Bohm had an RBI single to get the scoring started and Megill did well to limit the damage as he worked around a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first. New York’s offense responded to tie the game up at one thanks to an RBI single by Center Fielder Tyrone Taylor.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Center Fielder Brandon Nimmo blasted a solo home run to give the New York Mets a 2-1 lead. No more runs would be scored this evening as the Philadelphia Phillies “magic number” to win the NL East remained at one. New York’s offense was clutch as they went 2-of-3 with RISP and took three of four games from their hated rivals. How will each ballclub fare over the final week of the regular season?

New York’s bullpen was called upon to carry a heavy load this evening, and fortunately, they were up to the task. Megill was pulled after four solid innings and 83 pitches. Four relief pitchers were needed to preserve the shutout and clinch the victory. New York Mets Skipper Carlos Mendoza left nothing to chance as he called upon Closer Edwin Diaz to secure a six-out save for the second time in his career.

The New York Mets were lucky to win this game in the top of the ninth inning as Diaz wiggled out of a jam in the top of the ninth. He got Kody Clemens to strike out with runners on first and third base to end the game.

Phillies Staring Pitcher Zack Wheeler walked away with a tough loss tonight. He surrendered two earned runs over seven innings of work and punched out eight. He lowered his ERA to 2.56 on the season, the third-best mark in the league. He was undone by a few bad pitches and received no help from a usually high-powered Phillies offense.

Where Each Team Goes From Here

The New York Mets enter the final week of the 2024 regular season in a fight for one of the final two National League Wild Card spots. They are tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but occupy the second wild card spot due to a head-to-head tiebreaker. They are two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the wild card race. New York closes out the regular season with six games on the road: three games against the Atlanta Braves and three more against the Milwaukee Brewers. New York is in the driver’s seat to make the MLB Playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons.

Philadelphia has its sights set on the best record in both the National League and Major League Baseball. After clinching a playoff spot on Friday night, the Phillies are looking to make another deep playoff run. They finish off their regular season with three home games against the Chicago Cubs and three games on the road against the Washington Nationals. Both the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies have much to play for during the final week of the season.
