Travis Head Scored a Mammoth Century in Australia’s Win Over England

After England gave up a dominating position to spin, Travis Head scored his undefeated century and led Australia to victory by seven wickets. Ben Duckett’s 95 off 91 deliveries and Will Jacks’ 62 off 56 helped England go from 213 for two. In the 33rd over to 315, all were out with two balls remaining in the first of five One-Day Internationals at Trent Bridge.

Nine wickets fell to spin, and while Adam Zampa’s three-for-forty-nine in his 100th ODI may seem logical, England may be disappointed with part-timer Marnus Labuschagne’s three wickets. A scoreline of more than 350 was wasted. After hitting 20 fours and five sixes to finish with an ODI record 154 not out from 129 balls with six overs remaining, Australia’s World Cup final hero didn’t need a second invitation.

Stunning Inning By Australian Batsmen

When Australia’s Travis Head went airborne early on, they might have still had enough. But Carse was too far in from the boundary to hold onto a ridiculously tough one-handed opportunity above his head. With Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood out for the first game and Pat Cummins missing the tour, Australia’s top three fast bowlers are all out.

This was a wasted opportunity for an inexperienced England side that fielded two debutants and only Adil Rashid had played 30 or more ODIs. Ashid and the other spinners for England could not match the effect of Australia’s spinners. He grabbed nine wickets for 190 in 30.4 overs after Jacks. He was promoted to open, and Duckett built good foundations when Harry Brook won the toss on his debut as an international captain.

Despite this, they proceeded at nearly a run per ball as Duckett struck four leg-side fours in a single over against Sean Abbott. After Ben Dwarshuis dismissed Salt for just 17, the left-hander eventually settled with Jacks. Jacks and Duckett went to booming fifties, putting spinners Matthew Short and Zampa on the field for six. However, Zampa came up trumps to break a 120-run stand in 101 balls between Duckett and Jacks.

Marsh Strikes Early

Even as opposing number Brook settled with two massive sixes off of Short, Australia captain Mitch Marsh persisted with his spin, and the move to go to Labuschagne proved wise as he took return catches to eliminate the set batters. When Duckett got a harmless leading edge to a googly that seemed to remain on the surface, Brook looked suspiciously at the pitch after chipping back to Labuschagne to depart for 39 from 31 balls.

This was a chance of England matching a 30-over score of 201 for two vanished. Australia’s Marsh kept dangling the carrot and offering boundaries. Whereas, Jamie Smith holed out for 23 off the tip of his ODI bow. Even though Marsh was out of the game early in Australia’s response when throwing Matthew Potts to Carse, Jacob Bethell’s energetic debut score of 35 did not conceal an innings that ended without much movement.
