Manchester United Frustrated with Missed Chances in Draw vs Crystal Palace

Manchester United Crystal Palace

Dean Henderson was named man of the match as Crystal Palace held onto a draw against Manchester United, who felt they should have gotten all three points today. Erik ten Hag also felt that his team was hard done by because of their poor finishing in a match they were in control of most of the time. Crystal Palace had a few sniffs at the United goal but could not capitalize, and eventually, the points were shared at Selhurst Park.

Based on the result, Crystal Palace would emerge happier between the two clubs; however, from a Manchester United perspective, they had a frustrating afternoon as they could not build on their potent goal-scoring run, which saw them score ten goals in two games.

Frustrating Afternoon for Manchester United

Despite dominating most of the 90 minutes with possession of 67% and registering 15 shots compared to Crystal Palace’s 9, they were denied by an impressive performance by Dean Henderson, who made very important saves, keeping Crystal Palace alive in the game when it seemed like Manchester United had them by the scruff of the neck. The away side largely dominated the first half. However, they failed to make the most of their dominance, as the post denied Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho. Some crucial saves by Dean Henderson kept the match at bay until halftime.

It felt like it would only be a matter of time before Manchester United scored. However, half-time substitutes bringing off Jean Mateta and Adam Wharton for Ismaila Sar and Jefferson Lerma brought much-needed improvement and balance to the Crystal Palace side in the second half. Despite Manchester United’s dominance, Palace managed to settle into the occasion and ask questions of their opponents. Eberechi Eze’s chance from eight yards out was made from an excellent cutback by Sar, followed by a brilliant double save by Onana, which might be one of the year’s saves, denying both Nketiah and Sar for the opener. The two goalkeepers were a big reason for the stalemate.

Key Stats and Points

Manchester United had an xG( Expected goals) of 1.64 compared to Crystal Palace’s 0.98. It shows that United created many chances but failed to convert them. This means that despite their recent 3-0 victory over Southampton, their frustration in front of goal continues as they remain in the bottom three of teams with the lowest shot conversion rates in the league despite having high XG’s almost every match. This draw keeps United in 11th position in the league with only seven points from five games. Crystal Palace climbed up to 16th but still are yet to win a Premier League game.

Manchester United faces Tottenham next Sunday, with Ten Hag’s team also playing in the UEFA Europe League against Twente in midweek. The Dutchman has a great record in cup competitions but lost in the quarterfinals of the Europa League in his first season as United boss. Crystal Palace will be searching for their first win of the season with a match against relegation-threatened Everton.
