Are the Dallas Mavericks an improved team? Former Golden State Warriors star center Festus Ezeli reportedly thinks so.
Ezeli, 34, is a Nigerian-American from Benin City, Nigeria, and one of five children. His education included the Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, Jesuit High School in Sacramento, Calif., and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
Golden State selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. His four-year tenure with the Warriors spanned between 2012 and 2016. He won an NBA championship in 2015.
Ezeli, one of Klay Thompson’s former teammates in the Bay Area, recently commented on the Dallas Mavericks’ organization.
Festus Ezeli Praises Klay Thompson
According to Sporting News, Ezeli publicly praised his former teammate, Klay Thompson.
Ezeli recently said on NBA on ESPN, “I will say the Mavs, with Klay Thompson in the lineup, are going to be the best team in the West. I know the Minnesota Timberwolves and the OKC Thunder are going to have a lot to say about this as well, but you are replacing a little bit of the defense with more shooting by adding Klay Thompson into the lineup.”
He added the Mavericks’ addition of Thompson to their lineup made them the best team in the Western Conference for the 2024-25 NBA season.
Player Likes His New Team
After losing to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, the Mavericks made some changes in the offseason. Most notably, the Mavericks signed Thompson to a three-year, $50 million contract.
The Mavericks’ signing of Thompson was arguably to reinforce the Dallas lineup. Ezeli reportedly thinks that Thompson will make the Mavericks the team to beat in the Western Conference. Thompson was an All-NBA-level defender in his title days, but his resume might not translate to guaranteed success soon.
Mavericks Might Win With Thompson
The Dallas Mavericks might win with Klay Thompson.
The fact that Thompson won’t carry a heavy workload in Dallas can work in his favor. Also, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving can benefit from Thompson’s adaptable playing style and presence on the court. Ezeli recently said on NBA on ESPN, “In the locker room, Klay Thompson was such a huge boost for morale because of how low maintenance he was.”
The Mavericks might’ve struck gold with Thompson. Thompson’s one of the best shooters in the NBA. We’ll see how the Mavericks’ season in 2024-25 pans out.
