So far, the undefeated USU women’s soccer team has taken every team this season until they faced Washington State. After a win over Weber State with a score of 4-2, USU climbed two sports in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. In a curious chance of fate, when both teams met the field, neither scored against the other.

Playing to their first draw of the season over 90 minutes of scoreless play at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field, the Aggies record is now 8-0-1. The Washington State Cougars record is 3-3-3. They played their hearts out, handing the Aggies their first stalemate. The Aggies haven’t suffered a draw in a year.

USU Draw Against Washington State

This game means more than just a draw to the Aggies. Before this game, USU had a perfect start to their season with an 8-0 record, which matches both their best season start and their longest winning streak in program history. This has matched the highest NCAA ranking the USU team has ever achieved in any sport.

This draw is the 13th for Head Coach Manny Martins.

After they game he said:

“I’m really proud of the team. This is sports, this is soccer. If this had been a basketball game, we probably win by a good margin, but it’s soccer. It’s hard to score. As far as how we played, this was our identity. In the first half, we just didn’t create enough, but in the second half, we out-shot them 10-2 and down to the last second, we were making an effort on goal.

“I give Washington State credit. We knew they were a deep team that was going to come in and provide some challenges, and they did. I thought as the game went on, we raised ourselves to the challenge and created chances, but we didn’t put them away. I’m proud of the team. We’ll learn some things from this game that will make us better in Phoenix.”

Taking Some Positives From The Game

Despite being unable to take down the Cougars, it isn’t as terrible as it might seem. The Aggies have shut out six of their nine opponents so far this season. If you go back to the last season, 12 of their last 17 opponents have not scored against them. USU tried 15 shots with five on goal. One did go in, but it was called offside and taken back. In the 50th minute, Kylie Olsen sent the ball in the air, waiting for Kaylie Chambers’ head to angle her neck to send the ball over the goalie and into the net.

Washington State tried seven shots with four on goal. This was Aggie Cara Brendle’s second season start. She played all 90 minutes and had her season-best four saves. Another player who did extremely well was sophomore midfielder Summer Diamond, who led USU in shooting four times on the Cougars, with two on target.

Aggies Who Rocked It

Austin Miller and Whitney Lopez also took fantastic shots, each about 15 yards away, which were unfortunately blocked in the Aggies’ momentum push in the second half. Another play and Aggie who almost changed the game was Bizzy Arevalo. In the last five minutes of the game, she had a breakaway behind the Cougars’ backline but went down hard without a penalty awarded. Her condition is currently uncertain.

Utah State’s next game, the last non-conference game, will be on Sunday, the 22nd. The Aggies will be heading to Phoenix, Arizona, to face Grand Canyon. Fans can watch the match on ESPN+.
