New York Mets Jose Iglesias Makes History

New York Mets Infielder Jose Iglesias made history on Thursday night.

With a single to lead off the bottom of the third inning last night, New York Mets Infielder Jose Iglesias extended his hitting streak to a whopping 13 games. He finished the game 2-of-5 with two runs scored. Iglesias made history as he became the second player in Major League Baseball history to have a 13+ game hitting streak with six different ballclubs. He joins MLB legend Gary Sheffield as the only player in league history to accomplish such a feat. Iglesias is having a tremendous month hitting .367 in September.

Iglesias has been the catalyst for the New York Mets this season as his hit song “OMG” has become a rallying cry for the team in 2024. The team also has a huge chain adorning those same three letters that they use to celebrate any big achievements in the game. He is hitting .330 this season with 3 home runs and 24 RBI. Will Iglesias be able to continue his hitting streak as the New York Mets fight for a playoff spot over the final games of the regular season?

Jose Iglesias Career Summary

Iglesias made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox in 2o11 and has had stints with the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, Colorado Rockies, and New York Mets. He signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in December 2023 and has made the most of his opportunity this season.

The best two seasons of his career came in 2013 and 2015. He finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2013 and made his lone MLB All-Star Game appearance in 2015. He lost out to Wil Myers in ROY voting in 2013. Iglesias is a career .282 hitter with 50 home runs and 390 RBI.

New York Mets Upcoming Schedule

The New York Mets(85-68) have a 71.6% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs. They play the second game of their four-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies this evening. Iglesias will look to continue his hitting streak this evening. New York finishes their regular season with six games on the road against the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.

New York is in prime playoff position with nine games remaining for them in the 2024 regular season. If the New York Mets are to make the playoffs this year, and ultimately advance far, Iglesias will need to continue playing well. He has become a fan favorite in Flushing and his play on the diamond has only added to how much Mets fans adore him. He wants fans to be chanting OMG throughout the 2024 MLB Playoffs.
