Kendrick Perkins Believes Dallas Mavericks Could Collapse

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Maxi Kleber for this series and beyond.

ESPN analyst, Beaumont Panthers owner, and former NBA player Kendrick Perkins believes that the Dallas Mavericks could collapse at some point in the 2024-25 season. Perkins, 39, recently appeared on ESPN’s “NBA Today” as part of a panel. The Nederland, Texas, native shared his latest hot take about the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are a Western Conference team that has been drawing high expectations from most people in the basketball world. Perkins is arguably known for his hot takes, including this hot take about the Mavericks. Read on for further information surrounding Perkins’ hot take on the Mavericks.

Former NBA star center Kendrick Perkins has arguably been infamous for his hot takes in his post-NBA life. Perkins recently appeared on ESPN’s “NBA Today” and had this to say.

Sports Illustrated reported that Perkins said, “Is Klay Thompson really gonna turn back the hands of time? Is he gonna be that guy that’s gonna consistently knock down shots? And then Luka … we saw last season when he got to the NBA Finals, some could argue that Luka somewhat ran out of gas. He’s gonna put up the numbers because he’s gonna have the ball in his hands… but I’m looking at the Mavs, and no one is really fearing them right now… I expect Minnesota to come out and be better, and I expect the Lakers and so forth to be better.”

Perkins’ statement, which could double as an argument, is arguably wrong. Thompson hit three-pointers at a 38.7% rate last season with the Golden State Warriors and obviously without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving creating open shots for him at the time.

Kendrick Perkins’ Take Could Be Wrong

Kendrick Perkins is a former American big man who was listed as 6-foot-10 and 270 pounds. However, Perkins’ hot take about the Dallas Mavericks’ upcoming season could be wrong.

Aside from Klay Thompson’s most recent 38.7% rate, Luka Doncic battled various injuries during the 2024 NBA playoffs. Doncic appeared to lose his energy and enthusiasm on the court.

In addition, the Oklahoma City Thunder was arguably the only playoff team that improved the most because the Los Angeles Lakers barely improved, while the Minnesota Timberwolves somewhat improved.

How Dallas Mavericks Could Collapse

Of course, there’s a chance that Kendrick Perkins could be right in his hot take about the Dallas Mavericks. But the Mavericks could only collapse due to injuries.

The 2024 NBA preseason is coming up. The Mavericks should be fine, especially on the defensive side of the team. Thompson is arguably an injury-prone player, but his last injury, a knee injury, was sustained on April 13, 2024. Thompson sustained two season-ending injuries, a left ACL injury and a right Achilles tendon injury, in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 NBA seasons, so it’s safe to say that he’s three years removed from such injuries.
