UFC Bantamweight contender Umar Nurmagomedov has targeted newly crowned champion Merab Dvalishvili, hailing him for inconsistency when it comes to his stand on a title shot. The constant exchange of words has, therefore, created a lot of fuss regarding who should be the next contender for the 135-pound strap.
Nurmagomedov Accuses Dvalishvili of Hypocrisy
Nurmagomedov took to social media to criticize the Georgian champion for attempting to “select” his rivals. He referred to Merab Dvalishvili, and he said that the latter had been constantly evading him and claiming that he should not hide from talented wrestlers.
Umar Nurmagomedov also accused Dvalishvili of hypocrisy that he has never supported him despite him being a champion. He used the example of Dvalishvili Micho’s friend, Ilia Topuria, who earned a featherweight title shot after six consecutive wins and only one victory over a top-five ranked opponent, Josh Emmett. He noted that Dvalishvili didn’t object to Topuria’s title opportunity despite having fewer credentials than Umar Nurmagomedov does now.
When Merab’s friend, Topuria fought for the title, after 6 consecutive wins, and beating only one Top 5 ranked opponent Josh Emmet, I don’t remember that Merab was desperately protesting against such ‘unfairness’.
Dvalishvili’s Breakthrough at UFC 306
Merab Dvalishvili became a UFC Bantamweight Champion at the UFC 306 held in the Sphere in Las Vegas for his win. Dvalishvili was able to impose his ground game on the considerably younger O’Malley and did exactly what he said he was going to do before the fight to defeat O’Malley and take his title. The Georgian fighter saved the best for the last round and after this fight, it is impossible to dispute the fact that he is the best in the bantamweight division.
While O’Malley plans for the next campaign and as he prepares for a comeback, Dvalishvili will be concentrating on defending the new strap he won. Still, the subject of who his next opponent will be has raised eyebrows as other prospects seek their shot at the title.
Umar Nurmagomedov’s Rise in the Division
One of the names regarded as capable of getting a chance at Dvalishvili’s belt is that of Umar Nurmagomedov. The undefeated fighter from Dagestan has been performing a great streak, he recently outclassed Cory Sandhagen in Abu Dhabi to become a contender for the championship. Umar Nurmagomedov was of course in attendance for UFC 306, where he saw Dvalishvili get the win and may have just paved the way for a fight between the two.
As for Nurmagomedov, Dvalishvili has been constantly dismissing his claims for the title shot while arguing that the Dagestani has not earned his shot at the title over other contenders such as Deiveson Figueiredo.
He commented on the differences in our UFC records on social media. As the rivalry between Dvalishvili and Umar grows, the UFC has a decision to make about the future of bantamweight. Umar and Figueiredo have convincing reasons to believe they will be the next one in line for a title shot and fans and analysts are curious to see how the promotion will handle all of it.
Some rivals including Umar Nurmagomedov may be directing pressure towards Dvalishvili while the latter is busy defending his belt for the first time. Whether the UFC will grant the Dagestani his chance or opt for another direction remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: it is getting out interesting in the bantamweight division with upcoming bouts on the horizon.
