Pakistani head coach for white-ball cricket Gary Kirsten has expressed serious concerns over the workload of Pakistan’s biggest stars and their fast bowler, Shaheen Afridi. Afridi is currently leading the Lions in the Champions Trophy, a 50-over tournament organized by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Commentating on a match, Kirsten highlighted an “alarming stat” that should make every fast bowler and cricket fan sit up and take notice.
Shaheen Afridi’s Heavy Load Work
Shaheen Afridi has consistently been brilliant for Pakistan, with performances in multiple formats. However, Kirsten has come to a disturbing realization that the bowler has bowled more than any other fast bowler in the world over the last 18 months, with three times more overs. This heavy workload is alarming, as fast bowlers are more prone to injuries due to their job role that requires considerable physical exertion.
Indeed, the pressures of fast bowling are as intense as any other type of bowling. Here a player is always releasing high-speed deliveries with accuracy and control. Such constant strain on their bodies can lead to fatigue and injuries if not checked amiss. Kirsten’s caution spelled for an essential need for careful bowlers’ rotation without overworking them, especially in a game like cricket where games last for a long time when played at the same venue.
The second Test, which Pakistan sadly lost against Bangladesh, saw pacer Shaheen Afridi rest. This was part of an exercise to ward off workload management on him. Next month, Pakistan will host England for three Test matches, and hence Afridi’s teaming up is going to be important. For the team’s show in this series, his recovery and preparation will go a long way.
Rotation Plays a Crucial Role
Kirsten’s remarks reveal a larger issue in the game of cricket: the need for rotation of fast bowlers. Teams need to space their workload of regular bowlers so they do not get injured and fit well before the main event. Proper management would make a world of difference in the long-term success of the team, as well as the health of the players.
There has also been speculation of late about changes in the captaincy, another area of concern besides the workload of the players. Babar Azam was relieved of his duties as the white-ball captain after the 2023 ODI World Cup and replaced by Shaheen Afridi, who too was relieved after a disastrous series. Even Shan Masood was asked to be removed as a Test captain after defeat at the hands of Bangladesh. Kirsten is one of the head coaches of Pakistan, along with Jason Gillespie, and he has pleaded against hasty decisions that involve a change in the captaincy.
Looking Ahead
As Pakistan gears up for new challenges like the Test series against England, adequate worker control for players while leadership stability will be the need of the hour. The big role Shaheen Afridi can play only calls for him to be fit for action and ready for the challenge while letting all players, but especially the fast bowlers, make such contributions on the field with minimum injury risks.
A major concern that Gary Kirsten voiced is regarding the heavy workload of Shaheen Afridi in particular and how it applies to fast bowlers. The scary stat of Afridi’s overuse could be a warning that teams all over the world should be concerned about. At the same time, consistency in leadership positions is also critical for the success of a team. A balance between the fitness of players and consistency of leadership will be key for Pakistan to perform well in future matches.
