Chicago Cubs Salvage Series Finale in Colorado

The Chicago Cubs downed the Colorado Rockies 6-2 Sunday afternoon to win their first game of the three-game set. After two tight contests in the first two games, the Cubs opened up a big lead late in this one to secure a much-needed victory. Michael Busch hit two home runs and Pete Crow-Armstrong launched a two-run bomb of his own to carry the Chicago Cubs offense. The power surge helped ease the load for the back end of the Chicago bullpen and allowed them to secure a season series win over the Colorado Rockies.

Kyle Hendricks worked six strong innings of one-run ball and set a career-high for strikeouts with his fastball with seven. The crafty veteran worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning and missed a lot of Rockies’ bats in addition to his usual invitation of weak contact. With Hendricks out of the game, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell used three relievers to get the final nine outs of the ball game, navigating around another bases-loaded jam in the ninth.

Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong went yard for the Chicago Cubs in Sunday afternoon’s series finale in Colorado against the Rockies. The Chicago rookies drove in five of the Cubs’ six runs as Chicago salvaged a game in Denver after dropping the first two of the series. The 6-2 win comes after a pair of tight contests that the Cubs fell on the wrong side of, crucial for the NL Wild Card race, which Chicago is hanging in by a thread.

The offense was driven by a pair of youngsters, but it was the veteran Kyle Hendricks who carried the load on the mound. Hendricks, who has struggled mightily in his tenth season with the Chicago Cubs, had one of his better outings of the year. The right-hander pitched six innings, allowing one run, two hits, and three walks, and struck out seven, all on his fastball, which is a career-high for Hendricks.

After his six innings, the Chicago bullpen that had leaked runs in the first two games of the series tightened up and got the final nine outs of the game to secure the win. It did not come easily, though. Ethan Roberts got in and out of a jam in the seventh, stranding runners at the corners by striking out two Rockies in a row to end the inning. Keegan Thompson worked a clean eighth and was sent back out for the ninth to try and shut the door on Colorado after the Cubs extended their lead from 3-1 to 6-1 in the top of the frame.

The ninth did not go as well as the eighth for Thompson and he loaded the bases with nobody out before being lifted in favor of Tyson Miller. Nolan Jones drove in the Rockies’ second run of the game on a groundout, unfortunately for Colorado that was the last ball put in play of the day. Miller struck out the next two hitters and left the tying run in the on-deck circle. With the win, the Cubs improved to 76-73 and five GB of the final NL Wild Card spot.
