Tommy Edman Homers Twice in Dodgers’ Tough 6-3 Loss

The Los Angeles Dodgers Edman

In just one game, Tommy Edman doubled his number of home runs this season. While facing one of baseball’s newest and most regarded pitchers in the league, he launched two missiles to left field putting the Dodgers in a good place for victory.

Now having recorded his first home runs in Dodger Blue, he has fully settled into his role in Los Angeles. Within his short time on the field, he has made an impact both offensively and defensively. Will Edman be an imperative piece to the Dodgers’ success in October?

Edman Goes Deep Twice

On September 9, Edman hit his first home run as a Dodger. The long ball came in the bottom of the second inning during the second game of their series with the Chicago Cubs. Already starting the game down by one, Los Angeles had a hole to dig their way out of. Edman stepped up to the plate to face rookie sensation, Shota Imanaga. Not known to be much of a power-hitting righty, he electrified the crowd as he launched the first pitch he saw to deep left field.

The excitement did not stop there as Edman was set to face Imanaga again in the bottom of the fourth inning. For the second time in as many at-bats, he went deep as the ball traveled just out of reach of center fielder, Pete Crow-Armstrong. He finished the night going 2-4. Despite his best efforts, the Dodgers took their second loss of the series 6-3.

Edman With The Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Edman at the trade deadline in late July. He was a part of the big, three-team deal that landed the Dodgers with lights-out reliever, Michael Kopech. The super utility player was unable to play immediately as he has been out the entirety of the season rehabbing his wrist after undergoing surgery late last year. He made his Dodger Debut on August 19. Since then, he is slashing .293/.316/.427

Edman made his Major League debut in 2019 with the St. Louis Cardinals. In his debut season, he played in 92 games, batting .304 and slugging .500. He became a consistent force to be reckoned with during his time with the Cardinals. Throughout his career, he has had an overall consistent batting average, ranging mostly between .260-.300.

His consistency at the plate and athleticism in the field have made him a highly sought-after player for powerhouse teams like Los Angeles. His versatility is incredible as he can play both shortstop and second base while being well-seasoned in all three outfield positions. He won a Gold Glove Award at second base in 2021 and became a finalist in 2023 for a Gold Glove as a utility outfielder.

Future for the Los Angeles Dodgers

As the Dodgers take on the Cubs tonight in their series finale, they are looking to avoid the sweep and remain at the top of their division as the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres are only 4.5 games back. With Bobby Miller taking the mound for Los Angeles, they hope the offense will stay hot and give Miller enough support to pull out a win as they aim to move to 87-59 on the year.
