New York Mets Win Due To Late-Game Explosion; Extend Winning Streak To 6

The New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox tonight.

The New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-2 tonight to take the first two games of their three-game set and win their sixth game in a row. Boston Red Sox Starting Pitcher Kutter Crawford and New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson got off to a great start this evening. Both Crawford and Peterson struck out five batters in their first two innings of work. The whole tenor of the game shifted when Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor strutted up to the plate in the bottom of the third inning.

Lindor hit a two-run home run for the first runs of tonight’s game. It was his 30th round-tripper of the year. Red Sox Second Baseman Nick Sogard had an RBI single to cut NY’s lead in half. New York Third Baseman Mark Vientos added a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Red Sox then loaded the bases in the top of the eighth and the New York Mets were lucky to escape with one run given up. Relief Pitcher Reed Garrett induced an inning-ending double play from Red Sox Designated Hitter Masataka Yoshida.

The New York Mets offense was far from done. Lindor and Outfielder Brandon Nimmo each added an RBI in the bottom of the eighth. New York Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso put the game officially out of reach with a mammoth two-run home run to increase New York’s lead to five. Will New York be able to complete the series sweep tomorrow night?

Peterson had a career night at Citi Field. He surrendered one earned run over six stellar innings and finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 2.75 on the season. Crawford was great in his own right as he surrendered two earned runs over six innings while punching out eight. Crawford was ultimately let down by his offense tonight. The only hit he surrendered in his start was the Lindor home run. New York’s bullpen surrendered one earned run in three innings while Boston’s bullpen got lit up like a New York City skyscraper.

In only two innings, Boston’s bullpen surrendered five earned runs. The New York Mets remain only half a game back of the Atlanta Braves for the third and final National League Wild Card Spot as Atlanta also won this evening against the Colorado Rockies.

Looking Ahead To Tomorrow’s Game

The series finale will pit Boston Red Sox Starting Pitcher Tanner Houck(8-9, 3.12 ERA) against the New York Mets Tylor Megill(3-5, 4.82 ERA). Houck has been great this season. He is ninth in the league with a 3.12 ERA and is coming off a great start against the Detroit Tigers. He tossed six scoreless innings and punched out six, but walked away with a no-decision.

Megill has had an inconsistent season but has pitched better as of late. He surrendered one earned run over 5.1 innings and struck out six against the Chicago White Sox. The New York Mets will go for the series sweep tomorrow night at Citi Field as they look to keep their momentum going.
