Northwestern Names Mike Wright As Starting QB For 2024 Season

Northwestern

Northwestern University has announced that Mike Wright will be the starting quarterback of their upcoming game against Miami (Ohio). That’s significant because Northwestern becomes the third Power Conference program for which Wright has been a starting QB. His previous stops include Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.

Mike Wright’s Journey Through College Football

Mike Wright has been through a few programs himself: three years at Vanderbilt from 2020 to 2022, this past season at Mississippi State, and now he will be leading Northwestern’s offense. This experience across these teams will add so much value to Northwestern. In training camp, Wright was in a heated battle with redshirt sophomore Jack Lausch for the starting QB job. Wright, however, had more experience and the ability to do many things on the field to give him the nod. The fact that he could run the ball as well as he could, along with his prior success, won over the coaches.

This season, Northwestern has new offensive leadership with the addition of coordinator Zach Lujan. There will be a new offense for the team, and Wright’s experience is expected to play a valuable part in it. The skill set of the Wildcats is expected to be helped by their hope.

Mike Wright has started 14 games and appeared in 39 throughout his collegiate career. He had three starts for Mississippi State last season, after starting 11 at Vanderbilt. In his career, he has thrown for 2,520 yards and 24 touchdowns, while adding 1,229 yards on the ground and 10 touchdowns rushing. Northwestern finished the 2023 season with an 8-5 record and beat Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. Former quarterback Ben Bryant was at the helm of that success. The performance of the season helped Coach David Braun land the full-time coaching job after serving as interim coach.

Looking Ahead

A strong point this season is Northwestern’s defense. The school will return 76% of its defensive production, a high number in college football. The Wildcats finished at No. 35 in total defense last season – a great strength that it will get to keep intact. Offensively, though, Northwestern struggled last year, ending the season ranked No. 121 in total offense. It’s hoping that Wright’s leadership and a new system overcome some of these issues and make that side of the ball much more effective.

With Mike Wright at quarterback, the question is how the team will do. His experience and skill set could be just what the Wildcats need to get things turned around, and this week’s game with Miami (Ohio) will go a long way toward proving it. With Mike Wright as the quarterback to begin this season, Northwestern has a fresh perspective and experience coming into town. As the Wildcats try to amp up their offense to go along with their strong defense, his contribution will be needed. His future at Northwestern will be closely followed by many fans and analysts.
