Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes squeaked out a win against North Dakota State on Thursday night. While Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders put on an offensive show, the defense struggled to contain the opposing offense. If this team is going to make any noise in the Big 12 this year, the defense has to play better. Coach Prime knows this. He ripped his defense after the game for giving up the last touchdown.
Deion Sanders Rips Colorado Buffaloes Defense
The Colorado Buffaloes were in control in the fourth quarter, leading 31-20. North Dakota State, however, drove down the field, and quarterback Cam Miller scrambled for a 20-yard touchdown. No one touched him and there wasn’t a defender who was close. In a postgame video, Deion Sanders ripped the defense, saying the play “was just idiotic.” He added, “How many times are we gonna let the quarterback leak out?”
He clearly was not happy with how close the game was. While North Dakota State is one of the best programs in FCS, a Power 5 team should be able to handle them. This was one of the concerns heading into the season and the team did very little to calm the fears of many Colorado fans.
Defensive Struggles
The Colorado Buffaloes’ defense gave up 449 total yards to the Bison. Miller only had four incompletions total in four quarters of play, going 18-22 for 277 yards and a touchdown. He added 81 yards on the ground and another two scores. Most of the rushes came on scrambles, as the defense could not consistently keep the quarterback in the pocket.
The defensive struggles overshadowed a dominant performance by Travis Hunter and the rest of the offense. Shedeur Sanders threw for 445 yards and four touchdowns, with the lone interception coming on a fluke play. Hunter was spectacular. He caught seven passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns. On the flip side, he also played nearly every snap on defense.
Must See TV
No matter what the Colorado Buffaloes record is, they are must-see television. Deion Sanders and his star-studded staff have one of the most exciting teams. Furthermore, both Hunter and Shedeur are projected first-round draft picks in next year’s NFL Draft. They survived their week 1 matchup, and ultimately, a win is a win, no matter how ugly. However, if the team is truly looking to push for the College Football Playoff, they must quickly improve their defense.
