During the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Mercedes struggled during the weekend, causing people to question their recent evolutions on the car. When the two arrive at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, the team is ready to shed off the disappointing performance and reclaim the top position.
As the star performer on many occasions, Lewis Hamilton who had been contending for the top spot was left fuming after a tough qualifying round, arguing that his weekend was over before it began as his performance ended before the race was started. He finally completed in the eighth position, it’s a far cry from his usual performance.
George Russell also faced issues here, he came sixth and complained of having a lack of grip during the event. This performance was quite different from their latest achievement where Mercedes had won three of the four races.
Technical Difficulties and Configuration Problems

Mercedes’ Technical Director James Allison spoke more about the team’s challenges. He stressed that it would be unfair to say that a poor weekend is due to the track not being suitable for the car. Instead, he mentioned the chance factors a car might encounter during a particular weekend’s race meeting. As Allison says, the outcome depends on a variety of factors, ranging from the weather to the decisions made by the team when it is dark outside, he said;
Technical director James Allison said: It won’t be as simple as ‘the track doesn’t suit the car. Whether you have a good weekend or not, it’s dependant on a huge amount of things. They all need to be nearly dead-on right to get what you’d call the true pace of the car. In the run-up to shutdown, we managed to hit our stride at pretty much every track. In Zandvoort with the weather on Friday and the decisions we took overnight, we didn’t get into the groove to get the best from the car.
Questions About the Mercedes’s New Floor
One of the heated discussions for the weekend was Mercedes’ new floor that was used at the Spa only to be then taken off due to unknown effects. The decision to bring the floor back in to use at Zandvoort proof of their value is still unclear. Allison also pointed out that handling is required for steady speed over the curves and other speed changeovers, he mentioned;
We didn’t have a balanced car. That’s where the pace went. Whether it was the floor or the aero package? We need to keep an open mind. Right now, we know it measured the downforce. But we don’t know if it delivered balance.
In Conclusion
Before facing more races, including the Italian one at Monza, Mercedes is ready to work hard and try not to repeat the same mistakes. Mercedes, the current constructor championship holder, being fourth behind Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari, realizes there is no room for error to keep the championship dream alive. The next race will be important for the team in terms of relaying from a difficult weekend and getting back to the competitive pace.
